Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission recently announced that Pierce Lake Golf Course will close the back nine holes to repave 5 miles of cart paths on the golf course beginning Sept. 14 to the end of the golf season.
This will be a large and complex project that will have the back nine holes (10-18) closed to play from Sept. 14 through at least Oct. 9 with the possibility of longer closure depending on weather delays.
The front nine holes will be open through construction, however the back nine must be closed to play, as it is impossible to get carts past the bridge crossings and through several narrow course areas as the contractors are working.
In addition to cart path work, the golf course entry driveway and maintenance yard parking lot will be removed and repaved. Intermittent lane closures along the entry drive may occur, but access in and out of the facility will be maintained through this segment of work.
Discounts will be offered for golfers that would like to play two rounds of the front nine holes. “It is unfortunate that we have to close the back nine at the end of the season, but ultimately the upgrades to the facility will enhance the golfers experience at the course, and we pride ourselves in the maintenance of our course,” said Brian Klender, Pierce Lake Golf Course superintendent in a press release.
During the last few years, Pierce Lake Golf Course has undergone several major projects to enhance the course amenities and golfers experience.
In the fall of 2019, the clubhouse parking lot and adjacent paved walking trails were completely reconstructed. During the winter months, a new fleet of energy efficient – lithium battery powered golf carts were delivered and nearly 430 feet of wooden cart path bridges were rebuilt.
This spring a new irrigation pump station was installed to enhance watering needs of the course turf areas.

Our patrons should see several notable changes when they play our course next season and for many years to come,” said Klender.
In 2018, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission used a private company, the ETC Institute, to professionally survey county residents. “One of the main take-aways from that survey was that residents want us to invest in our facilities, to upgrade and provide quality services to the public. That is what we are doing, and will continue to do,” said Coy Vaughn, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission director.
The reopening date will be announced and shared on the Pierce Lake Golf Course and Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission social media pages when construction has been completed.
