Plant lovers flock to Chelsea Area Garden Club plant sale (with slideshow)

A rainy day was not a deterrent for the Chelsea Area Garden Club’s annual plant sale May 12 at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds. The sale goes on rain or shine.

“I was in on the original garden club plant sale 20 years ago,” said club member Jayetta Edwards.

The Chelsea Area Garden Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To what does it owe its longevity?

“To a lot of hard work,” said plant sale co-chair Mary Randolph.

About 30 people lined up before the sale began at 8 a.m. Susan Zale was one of them.

“I got here early for a good selection and there’s so much,” she said, having found what she came for – ornamental grasses and hasta. “You can’t beat the prices.”

All the plants are donated by members of the garden club, many of whom were on hand to offer guidance to shoppers.

When the rain came down hard at 8:45 a.m., some shoppers took cover in the Exhibition Barn, some headed home, and others were bound and determined to find the plants they’d come there for.

The plant sale is always held before Mother’s Day. Proceeds support scholarships, grants, and civic beautification.
