Malicious destruction of property reported

On Dec. 31 at about 1:15 p.m., police were called to the 700 block of South Main St. for a eport of a malicious destruction of property.

According to the police report, an unknown suspect shot the victim’s front window with either a BB or pellet gun.

The victim told police the incident occurred sometime between Dec. 30 at 8:30 p.m. and when it was discovered on Dec. 31 at about 1 p.m.

At the time of the report, there was no suspect information available.

Case was closed pending any further leads.

Malicious destruction of property reported

On Dec. 26 at about 5 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of Van Buren Street for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The homeowner told people he’d discovered BB sized holes in the home’s vinyl siding as well as a broken window pane.

The victim told police that the damage occurred sometime between Dec. 25 and Dec. 26 at 5 p.m.

There is no suspect information available, and the case is closed pending any further information on a potential suspect.

Contents of package reported stolen

On Dec. 26 at about 12:10 p.m., police were called to the 200 block of Harrison Street for a report of the theft of items from a mailed package.

The victim told police that he looked out his window and saw an opened box laying on the ground in front of his residence.

When he went to investigate, the package was addressed to him but the contents were missing. The thief left the box and the note that was included inside.

The victim contacted the sender and found that it had contained a folding pocket knife.

According to the USPS, the box had been delivered on Dec. 24.

The theft took place sometime between then and Dec. 26 at noon.

At the time of the report, there was no suspect information available.

Retail fraud reported

On Dec. 17 at about 1:30 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of South Main Street for the report of a retail fraud.

The complainant told police that an item valued at $275 that had been in the front display window was discovered missing between 10:05 and 11:30 a.m.

The complainant did not have any suspect information, and told police that about 10 shoppers were in the store during the time of the theft.

Case is closed pending any further leads.

Driver of stolen car charged with multiple crimes

On Dec. 20 at about 1:40 a.m., police were on the lookout for a stolen silver Chevy Malibu that was reported stolen in Jackson County.

Police pulled over a vehicle that matched the Michigan State Police notification as being stolen at the intersection of W. Old US-12 and Gene Drive.

The driver gave police multiple false identities but after a fingerprint check was done, the suspect was identified to be a 38-year-old Michigan Center woman.

She was arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics after the officer conducted field sobriety tests. In addition, she was found to be in possession of multiple prescription pills with no valid proof of ownership.

She was taken to Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office.

The vehicle was towed and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department was notified that the vehicle was located.

License plate stolen from vehicle

On Dec. 22 at about 12:18 p.m., police were called to the 500 block of North Main Street for the report of a stolen license plate.

The victim stated that he had just gone to the Michigan Secretary of State and gotten a license plate for his pickup truck and sometime between Dec. 21 at 10 p.m. and Dec. 22 at 11:30 a.m., it had been stolen from his vehicle, possibly in the parking lot of the building where he lives.

There was no suspect information available at the time of the report.

The case remains open pending review of some potential surveillance video footage.

Traffic crash under investigation

On Dec. 13 at about 7:17 a.m., police were called to the intersection of West Old US-12 and Gene Drive for a car crash.

One driver, a 45-year-old Jackson man, told police that he might be under the influence of a prescribed controlled substance.

According to the police report, he appeared to be confused about what had transpired and stated that he could not see well out of his windshield.

In addition, the driver was also believed to have been involved in several other traffic incidents and crashes ranging as far away as the outskirts of Grass Lake, inside Jackson County, that morning.

The officer went to the University of Michigan emergency room where the suspect was transported, and requested that he submit to a blood analysis to determine if he was under the influence of narcotics, and if so, the level of intoxication, according to the police report.

The suspect complied with the request and the blood will be submitted to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for potential criminal charges.

iPad found in recycling bin

On Dec. 4 at about 10:30 p.m., police took a report for a recovered iPad that had been found in a recycling bin on Old Manchester Road.

The person who discovered the item told police there was an iPad as well as a book and a small sewing kit found inside a Ziploc bag, and also  information to indicate that the items belonged to a guest who stayed at a local hotel.

Police contacted the hotel and were told that the items had been left behind by a guest in October and had apparently been discarded since the owner never retrieved them.

The Chelsea Police Department is currently in the process of trying to make contact with the owner of the items.

Until contact is made with the owner, the items will be held in the property room.

31-year-old Chelsea man arrested on warrant
On Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. in the 300 block of South Street, police responded to a residence to arrest a man wanted for a malicious destruction of property complaint connected with a previous domestic dispute.

The 31-year-old Chelsea man answered the front door, was identified, placed under arrest and informed of the warrant.

He was taken to the Chelsea Police Department, fingerprinted, and processed and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where he will be held pending arraignment.

The case was closed with the issuance of the warrant and the subsequent arrest.

Police investigating embezzlement report
Police are actively investigating a report of embezzlement by an employee from a business in the 900 block of S. Main Street.

The thefts allegedly took place several times during October and November by an employee and were reported on Nov. 7.

The case is currently open and pending Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s review.

Resident finds wallet on sidewalk takes to police station
On Oct. 22 at about 9:05 p.m., a resident found a wallet on the sidewalk near the intersection of Provincial Drive and KimLee Court and took it to the Chelsea Police station.

The wallet was inspected by police and cash as well as credit cards were found inside.

A contact phone number was located for the owner and an Ypsilanti woman drove to the police station to retrieve her wallet.

Fowlerville man found sleeping in construction site
On Oct. 12 at about 2:25 a.m., Chelsea police found a man sleeping in a building under construction in the 100 block of Jackson St.

According to the police report, the 33-year-old Fowlerville man told police he did not have anywhere to stay and was in the Chelsea area because he had a scheduled court appearance in Chelsea on Monday morning.

The man was taken to the Chelsea Police Department to warm up and was given some information on some additional available resources that did not involve unlawfully entering a property.

The case remains open pending notification of the property owner and whether the owner wishes to pursue criminal charges for unlawful entry.

Halloween decorations stolen
On Oct. 7 at about 8:15 a.m., police were called to the 200 block of Jackson Street for a report of stolen yard decorations.

The victim told police 5 or 6 strands of orange Halloween lights and additional Halloween decorations were stolen sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.

The officer noted there appeared to be some bicycle tracks that led to Railroad Street, but the tracks were lost and it was unclear if these tracks were related to the theft.

There are no suspects at this time.

iPad taken from nightstand
On Oct. 4 at about 4:30 p.m., police were called to the 800 block of West Middle Street for a report of a stolen iPad.

The victim told police she’d placed the iPad on her nightstand when she went to bed and when she awoke she noticed it was not there.

At the time of the report, there were no suspects.

The case was closed pending further leads or suspect information.

Firewood reported stolen from Darwin Drive
On Sept. 26 at about 8:20 p.m., police were called to the 700 block of Darwin Drive for a report of stolen firewood.

The victim told police the firewood had been taken between 2-5 p.m. and that his neighbor had seen a white FedEx truck pull up to his property. The witness said two males got out of the vehicle, loaded the firewood into the truck and left the area.

The victim told police he’d contacted FedEx customer service and they were not helpful in identifying the driver who was in that area at the time of the theft.

The case was closed pending any further leads on the identity of the occupants of the FedEx truck.

Police respond to assault complaint
On Sept. 22 at about 2:50 a.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Main Street for a report of a possible assault and battery.

Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the complainant who stated that he had gotten into an argument with a co-worker and as tempers flared, the suspect stepped up to the victim and headbutted the victim.

The victim told the officer that he was not injured and required no medical attention.

The victim did not wish to pursue criminal charges.

Female driver arrested for DUI
On Sept. 21 at about 1:30 a.m. at the corner of W. North St. and N. Main St., police pulled over a vehicle traveling southbound on Main Street driving 66 mph in a 45-mph zone.

The officer activated the emergency lights caught up to the vehicle in area of W. North St. and N. Main St. when the vehicle pulled into a parking lot and came to a stop.

The officer approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver later identified to be a 23-year-old Stockbridge woman. Immediately upon making contact, the driver told the officer she did not have valid insurance on the car. After questioning the driver, the officer asked her if she had any alcohol to drink because there was a smell of intoxicants on the driver.

The woman admitted to having three glasses of vodka and orange juice. The officer performed standard field sobriety tests on the driver and at the conclusion, the driver was placed under arrest for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

She was eventually transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office.

Counterfeit $50 bill
On Sept. 17 at about 2 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Main St. for the report of an attempted passing of a counterfeit $50-dollar bill.

Upon arrival the officer met with the complainant as well as the man who had passed the counterfeit bill. The man told police that he had received the bill along with several other bills approximately 3 weeks ago at a Flagstar Bank when he cashed a check.

The bill was taken as evidence and will be submitted to the United States Secret Service for further investigation and analysis.

No charges will be filed at the time of this report.

Drone operator accused of disorderly conduct
On Aug. 30 at about 4:30 p.m. police were called to the 700 block of South Main Street for a report of a disorderly person complaint.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the complainant who stated that she had taken her two children to the city park to play on the playground and noticed a drone being flown in the area near where her children were playing.

The complainant told the officer that the drone began coming closer and closer to her and her children, and she could see that the drone was equipped with a camera and did not appear to be under safe control by the operator.

According to the police report, the complainant told the officer that the drone came within approximately 8 feet of her and her children.

Earlier, she said the drone crashed into a tree and fell to the ground.

When she told the operator she’d called the police, he left the area.

He was later identified by license plate and the officer contacted him at his residence.

The incident will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine if any charges will be pursued.

Harassment complaint
On Aug. 22 at about 11:30 p.m. police were called to the 1400 block of E Old US-12 for a harassment complaint against a 33-year-old Chelsea man, who was bothering his ex-girlfriend via text messages.

In addition, the man had a no-contact order invoked as part of his release from jail on bond.

The victim told police that her ex-boyfriend had recently been released from jail on an unlawful entry complaint and he contacted her multiple times since his release via text message even though there was a no contact order in place.

While the officers were at the scene speaking with the complainant, the man tried calling her.

The case was forwarded to the judge who issued the no contact order, for review and potential violation of the suspect’s bond agreement.

Chelsea man charged with unlawful entry, malicious destruction of property

On Aug. 19 at about 3:30 a.m., police responded to the 14000 block of E. Old US-12 for the report of an attempted home invasion in progress.

The victim told police that she believed her ex-boyfriend was trying to break into her house and had broken a screen out of the window by punching it.

While on the phone with the police, the victim said she thought that the suspect had heard her call 911 and had fled the area.

The officers searched the area for the suspect and located a man matching the description provided by the victim about 100 yards from the victim’s residence.

The suspect, a 32-year-old Chelsea man, was arrested and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where he was held pending warrant review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

He was charged and arraigned on charges of unlawful entry and two counts of malicious destruction of property under $200.

Computer stolen
On Aug. 6 at about 8 a.m., police were called to the 700 block of South Main St. for the report of a stolen computer.

The victim had video footage of the suspect, a 64-year-old Jackson man. According to the police report, the man was seen unhooking the computer peripherals and just out of camera view, putting the computer in his backpack.

The victim said the theft took place on Aug. 5 about 10:30 p.m.

The officer went to the suspect’s residence and the suspect said the computer was inside.

The case remains open pending warrant review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for a charge of larceny from a building.

Missing ring
On July 31 at about 4:35 p.m., police responded to the 800 block of W. Middle St. for a report of a missing ring.

The victim told police that the ring was taken between July 24-31.

The sterling silver ring has a cubic Zirconia stone and is valued at about $100. It was last seen in the night stand beside the bed.

Case closed pending any further information on a suspect.

Owner cited for loose dog
On July 29 in the 400 block of Washington Street, police were called at about 9:40 a.m., for a report of a loose dog running around the neighborhood.

Police met with the complainant who’d found the Boston Terrier and after speaking with neighbors the owner was located.

According to the police report, the dog had no tags or identification and this was the third time that the dog had been found running loose in the area.

A citation for “dog running at large” was issued to the owner by the officer.

Retail fraud reported
On July 24 at about 10 a.m., police were called to the 1000 block of S. Main St. for a report of retail fraud that had apparently taken place the day before.

According to the police report, the complainant told police she was told by another employee that a white female customer checked out with a single poster board, but also had a bag of merchandise in the shopping cart.

The clerk told police that she felt “funny about the situation” but did not ask or confront the suspect at the time.

When the manager/complainant was notified, she reviewed the surveillance footage and observed the suspect stick several unpaid for items in the shopping bag.

The suspect was described as a white female with brown shoulder-length hair, between 5’ 5” and 5’ 7” tall and approximately 200-230 pounds. She was wearing a gray shirt, Capri jeans, and black flip flops.

The case remains open pending further investigation and review of the surveillance footage.

Shotguns stolen from Railroad Street residence

On July 21 at about 7:55 p.m., a resident from the 400 block of Railroad Street arrived at the Chelsea Police Department to report that he noticed that about a month ago two of his shotguns were missing from his basement.

The victim told police he thought both of the shotguns had missing parts, which would make them inoperable.

The victim stated that he was unsure as to who may have stolen the shotguns, but that his son has multiple friends coming in and out of the house.

Case closed pending any further leads.

Counterfeit bill fraud

On July 17 at about 5:45 p.m., police were called to the 1500 block of South Main Street for a report of an attempted counterfeit bill complaint.

Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the complainant who stated that a customer in the drive thru with a maroon older model Ford Taurus placed an order for about $4.

The suspect attempted to pay with a $20-dollar bill and when the staff checked the bill, it tested as counterfeit.

The suspect was told that the bill was not real and the suspect then provided the employee with a $5-dollar bill, which was authentic.

The suspect then asked for the $20-dollar bill back, which staff refused to provide, and the suspect left the area.

The counterfeit bill and information about the vehicle used in the crime will be passed on to the United States Secret Service.

Stolen license plate

On July 8 at about 5 p.m., police were called to the 500 block of Arthur Street for a report of a stolen license plate.

The victim told police that he was sure the plate was on the vehicle on July 7 at about 2 p.m., but noticed it was gone the next day about 5 p.m.

The victim told police he only drove the vehicle into the driveway from the street where the vehicle was originally parked.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

The license plate was entered into the National Crime Information Center computer system should another law enforcement agency find it.

Identity theft reported

On June 30 at about 6 p.m., a Chelsea resident reported that someone had opened up several charge accounts using the victim’s social security number.

There are no potential suspects at the time of the report.

Malicious destruction of landscaping reported

On June 29 at about 7:45 a.m. police were called to the 400 block of Savannah Lane, for a report of “malicious damage” to landscaping.

The victim told police that the damage took place between 1 a.m. on June 28 and 7:30 a.m. on June 29.

Police found damage to tree branches and tall ornamental grass.

At the time of the report, there was no suspect information available, and the case was closed pending any further information.

Armed robbery

On June 28 at about 7:50 p.m., police were called to the 1500 block of S. Main Street for a report of a possible assault in progress in the parking lot.

The suspects, an 18-year-old Chelsea man, a 17-year-old Chelsea man and another 17-year-old Chelsea man were booked and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail on felony charges of armed robbery.

According to the police report, when police arrived, the suspects had left the scene in a white Ford Crown Victoria but the victim was still on the scene.

The victim told police he’d gotten into a white Crown Victoria with the suspects to sell them some marijuana.

According to the victim, the transaction “did not go according to plan and one of the suspects, an 18-year-old Chelsea man, pulled a pistol on the victim and demanded that he turn over the drugs and get out of the car.”

A physical altercation took place, which eventually “led to the victim being struck multiple times and he was pulled out of the vehicle,” according to the police report. The suspects then fled the scene with the marijuana.

No shots were fired and the victim declined medical treatment.

All of the suspects were identified, and the vehicle was found parked on the street in Lincoln Park. At the time, the vehicle was unoccupied and eventually towed for evidence since it was involved in a robbery, according to the police report.

After police made multiple contacts with the suspects’ parents, the three Chelsea males turned themselves in to the Chelsea Police Department the following day.

Loose dog at Timbertown leads to pepper spray incident
On June 16 at about 8:20 p.m., police were called to Timbertown for a report of a dog running loose.

Upon arrival, the officers met with the people involved (including a witness) and determined that the incident had escalated resulting in one of the men and his dog being pepper sprayed.

The original complainant stated that he witnessed another man let his dog out of the vehicle without a leash, which is against park rules according to the police report. He verbally confronted the man, then called police.

The dog owner regained control over his dog and after an exchange of words, the complainant told police he was scared because the dog owner was approaching him with his dog, so he pepper-sprayed them.

After interviewing everyone involved, the men were released and the case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review to determine if there should be any prosecution.

The two men involved were a 61-year-old Chelsea man and a 64-year-old Chelsea man.

Unlawful entry reported
On June 14 at about 11 p.m., police were called to the 300 block of N. East Street for a report of a unlawful entry into a building.

Cleaning staff inside the building found two white males inside after hours, according to the police report, and confronted one of them asking why he was there at that hour.

One of the men said “he thought he worked here,” before leaving the building according to the police report.

The cleaning staff conducted a search of the building and found no forced entry, but did find a door that had been propped open with a rock.

Police were not contacted until the following morning when management was alerted to the situation.

The men were described as two white males in their mid-30’s wearing golf-type polo shirts, shorts and ball caps.

Retail fraud on East Middle Street
On June 13 at about 4:15 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of East Middle Street for a report of retail fraud that had taken place on June 12 at about 11:30 a.m.

The complainant told police that she had security footage of a white female in her mid-50’s taking four blouses and a pair of shoes out of the store without paying for them.

The suspect, a 55-year-old Dexter woman ,was identified a couple of days later when she returned to the store.

The suspect was confronted by the staff and police, and she admitted to having taken the items and returned all but two blouses to the store.

The case remains open pending review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office for charges of retail fraud.

Unusual behavior leads to vaporizer find
On June 1 at about 1:15 a.m., police observed an 18-year-old Chelsea man striking a vehicle with a crowbar in the 1500 block of South Main Street.

The officer approached the man and asked what he was doing, and the man told police he was trying to pop a dent out of the vehicle.

While talking to the man, the officer observed a vaporizer in the front passenger compartment of the vehicle and asked if the vaporizer contained any marijuana because an odor of marijuana was present.

“The subject stated that the vaporizer was not his and was a co-worker who was inside working,” according to the police report.

The officer went inside the business and all employees denied any knowledge of the item.

When the officer returned and told the man that they all denied any knowledge of the vaporizer, he changed his story and said that an unnamed friend had left it in the vehicle.

The vaporizer was seized and will be submitted to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for analysis to determine if marijuana is present and if so, the amount.

The 18-year-old Chelsea man was released following questioning but told that the case would remain open pending laboratory analysis and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

46-year-old Chelsea woman arrested for domestic assault
On May 29 at about 8:30 a.m., police were called to the station for a report of a domestic dispute in the 1400 Block of Carston Lane.

A male victim told police that he and his estranged wife had gotten into a domestic dispute and she had bitten him on the arm and assaulted him.

The victim stated that he was in the process of a divorce and attempting to move out of the house when the argument began.

Officers went to the home but found no one there.

Several hours later, the suspect arrived at the Chelsea Police Department and gave a full statement regarding the day’s events. The woman, a 46-year-old Chelsea woman, was placed under arrest and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where she will be held pending prosecutor’s review.

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the case and authorized a charge of one count of Domestic Assault.

54-year-old Chelsea man arrested for alleged assault, felony warrant
On May 27 at about 10:30 p.m., police were called back to the police station to take a report about an assault that took place in the 100 block of Lincoln St.

The victim told police he was assaulted by his brother with whom he lives.

The suspect, a 54-year-old Chelsea man, was subsequently arrested and also held on a felony warrant out of Genesee County.

He was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail where he will be held pending warrant review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Retail fraud alleged
On May 25 at 4:25 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Main Street for a report of retail fraud.

The complainant told police that the suspect, later determined to be an 18-year-old Chelsea man, had entered the establishment and poured a fifth of vodka in a water bottle and attempted to leave the store.

When staff confronted the suspect, he denied any knowledge and fled the store in a pickup truck.

The case remains open pending further investigation and review of the surveillance camera footage.

E-mail harassment complaint
On May 19 at about 11 a.m., police were called to the 20000 block of W. Old US-12 for an e-mail harassment complaint.

The victim told police that as part of the business, items are posted on Craigslist for sale. During the last several months, she has been receiving multiple harassing reply messages to items posted online.

On May 19, however, she told police that the harassing replies had reached an escalated level.

The incident remains open pending further investigation into the person or persons sending the messages.

Forced entry into South Main Street location
On May 17 at about 2:50 a.m., police heard a burglar alarm going off in the 1600 block of S. Main Street and the responding officer found a rear service door had been forced open.

No one was found during a search of the building.

The owner was called in and an inventory disclosed some start-up money had been stolen. It’s believed the break-in happened between 6 p.m. on May 16 and 2:50 a.m. on May 17.

The case remains open.

Armed robbery on South Main Street
On May 15 at about 11:45 p.m., there was an armed robbery in the 1600 block of S. Main St.

Police are looking for a light-skinned black male about 6’1 weighing about 260-275 pounds. He was wearing a light blue fabric mask covering part of his face and had on a black nylon jacket, dark colored sweat pants, a Detroit Tigers ball cap, white or light-colored gloves, and white and red Reebok brand sneakers.

Chelsea Police Chief <strong>Ed Toth</strong> said he could not go into specifics but described the suspect as “having a confidence about him” that made it seem as though this was not his first armed robbery.

Toth said that he is working with other police departments “trying to match up a similar MO.”

He also said the robber was carrying a semiautomatic pistol.

According to the police report, a silent holdup alarm had been pulled on May 15 at about 11:45 p.m. and a female victim told police a masked suspect entered her place of work at around 11:40 pm and pointed a black handgun at her and demanded all of the money out of the cash drawer.

The victim said she complied with the demands and the suspect took the money and fled the scene north — possibly toward an awaiting car in a nearby parking lot.

A K-9 officer was requested and with the assistance of the Ann Arbor Police Department, the track ended in the 1500 block of S. Main Street near the side of some nearby businesses.

Purse left at restaurant stolen
On May 6 at about 2 p.m., a woman arrived at the police station to report a stolen purse.

She told police that she’d left the bag at a restaurant in the 300 block of North Main Street on May 5 and called the restaurant when she realized she’d left her purse there.

She was told it was in the lost and found but when she went back the next day, the purse was gone. A search of the restaurant came up empty.

The case remains open pending further interviews or leads.

Bedspreads, curtains, pillow shams stolen from trailers
On May 2 at about 2:10 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of S. Main Street for a report of “bedding materials” stolen from trailers.

The victim told police that in recent days, he’d noticed window coverings, pillow shams and bed spreads were missing from his trailers.

A search of the wooded area adjacent to his property turned up several of the missing items, which were secured in trash bags to keep them dry.

The victim said he believed that the theft occurred in the evening hours within the last two days.

The case was closed pending any further information.

Item thought stolen, delivered to wrong address
On May 1 at about 5:30 p.m., officers were called to the police station for a report of a stolen package left outside a residence in the 800 block of Moore Drive.

The victim stated that he had ordered an item online and it was shipped via USPS and supposedly delivered to his front door on May 1.

After initiating the report, the victim later learned that the package had in fact not been stolen; it was inadvertently delivered to the wrong condominium.

Case was closed.

Traffic violation uncovers driver’s suspended license
On May 1 at about 2 p.m. police stopped a driver in the 13000 block of E. Old US 12 for a traffic violation and a computer check revealed the 51-year-old driver from Scio Township was operating his vehicle on a suspended license.

After unlawfully passing another car on the shoulder, the suspect had been pulled over was later released; but his car was left parked in a lot until a licensed driver could retrieve it.

The case remains open pending warrant authorization on a charge of driving with a suspended license (2nd or more offense).

Flowers, trash strew at Oak Grove Cemetery
On April 25 at about 11:30 a.m., police were called to the 100 block of Madison Street for a report of damage at Oak Grove Cemetery.

The complainant reported that throughout multiple areas in the cemetery, flowers and trash-type debris had been strewn throughout the area, according to the police report.

At the time of the report, there was no damage found to any grave sites or headstones.

It is unknown exactly when this occurred and prior to officer’s arrival the debris was already cleaned up by the maintenance people at the cemetery.

Anyone witnessing any suspicious activity in the cemetery is urged to contact the Chelsea Police Department.

Man stopped on I-94 after smashing jar of jelly at South Main Street store
On April 25 at about 12:35 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street for a report of a disorderly person who got angry with a clerk and smashed a glass jar of jelly that was for sale on a shelf.

While dispatch was on the phone, the caller told police that the suspect, later determined to be a 31-year-old Kalamazoo man, had gotten into his vehicle and left the area, driving onto Westbound I-94.

Officers responded to the scene and made contact with the complainant.

The suspect information was provided to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and they were able to locate the vehicle traveling on I-94. The suspect was identified and released by Jackson County.

After speaking with the owner of the business the following day, he told police that he did not wish to pursue the matter further.

The case was closed by the investigators.

Tire and rim stolen from vehicle in 600 block of West Middle Street
On April 30 at about 7 a.m., police were called to the 600 block of West Middle Street for a report of a tire and rim stolen from a vehicle.

The theft took place between April 29 at 11 p.m. and April 30 at 7 a.m.

The victim stated that an unknown suspect used a jack to raise his vehicle and had stolen one of the driver side tires and rims off from the vehicle.

The case was closed pending further information.

Truck stolen from South Main Street parking lot
On April 19, at about 5:20 p.m., police responded to the 1100 block of South Main Street for a report of a stolen vehicle.

The victim told police that on April 17 at 7:15 a.m., an unknown person took the light brown 2004 Dodge Ram ¾-ton, 4-door truck.

The theft wasn’t reported right away because the owner was unaware the truck was missing.

The case remains open pending further investigation and review of video surveillance footage of the area, but the vehicle was entered into the National Crime Computer as being stolen.

Dexter woman wanted on felony warrant arrested in Chelsea
On April 18 at about 12:30 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Commerce Park Drive for a report of a suspicious vehicle.

Police found three women inside a vehicle and a computer check of the three women inside the vehicle found that one was wanted on a felony warrant from Blackman Township for forgery.

The suspect, a 33-year-old Dexter woman, was placed under arrest and was turned over to the Blackman Township Department of Public Safety where she will be lodged pending arraignment on the charge.

The other female subjects were released from the scene without incident.

South Main Street business scammed
On April 16 at about 5 p.m., police responded to the 1100 block of South Main Street for the report of a fraud/swindle that had occurred earlier in the day.

The victim said she’d received a phone call from an individual purporting to be from DTE Energy and was advised that the power to the business would be cut off if the company did not immediately receive payment for the past due amount of $1,000.

The victim said she was in fear of the power being shut off and made a rash decision to go to the local CVS Pharmacy as directed by the caller and purchased a pre-paid Green Dot Money Card.

The complainant was directed to give the PIN number activation code to the caller.

A short time later, the scammer called again to solicit more money to keep the power on, but by then the victim realized that it was a scam and did not comply further.

Woman wanted on forgery warrant turned over to Chelsea PD
On April 14 at 7:35 p.m., Chelsea Police were advised that a 35-year-old Dearborn woman, wanted on a Chelsea warrant for failing to appear in court on a forgery charge, was arrested in Detroit.

Chelsea Police drove to Romulus Police Department to pick up the woman who had been arrested and delivered there by the Detroit Police Department.

She was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where she will be held pending her court appearance on the charge.

Southgate man violates personal protection order
On April 3 at about 1 p.m., police were called to the 1000 block of South Main Street for a man in a lobby causing a disturbance, who was also in violation of a personal protection order.

Police found a 56-year-old Southgate man, who was visibly intoxicated and had an odor of alcohol, according to the police report.

A computer check revealed that the suspect was in deed in violation of this protection order and it prohibited him from being on the premises.

The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Chelsea Police Department where he was processed then transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

A review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor authorized multiple charges: felony aggravated stalking, drunk and disorderly and violation of a personal protection order.

The subject has subsequently been arraigned on the charges.

Telephone fraud complaint lodged
On April 6 at about 2:45 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of Gene Drive for a report of a fraud by telephone.

The victim told police a person who identified himself as a representative from DTE Energy, demanded payment for an overdue account and the victim was told if the money was not paid, the gas would be shut off.

The victim complied with the caller’s instructions and was swindled out of several hundred dollars by purchasing a pre-paid money card and providing the secure payment credentials to the suspect.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

Larceny from unlocked vehicle
On March 27 at about 7:30 p.m., police were called to the 1300 block of St. James Place for a report of a larceny from a vehicle.

The victim told police that the theft took place sometimes between March 21-22.

A coffee mug and nicotine lozenges were among the missing items.

The vehicle was unlocked and there were no signs of forced entry.

Vehicle vandalized on North Freer Road
On March 27 at about 3 p.m., police were called to the 700 block of North Freer Road for a report of a vandalized vehicle.

The vehicle had been parked in the lot since the evening of March 23 and the owner found all four tires slashed upon return.

The incident remains under investigation.

30-year-old Chelsea man arrested for domestic assault
On March 27 at about 12:20 a.m., police were called to the 300 block of South Street for a report of a domestic disturbance.

The victim told people that she and her boyfriend had gotten into an argument and he’d “held her shoulders hindering her from being able to get up off the couch and away from him,” according to the police report.

The victim told people once she was able to get free, she began cleaning up food that had fallen on the floor and he “came up behind her and grabbed her underneath her arms and threw her onto the couch,” according to the police report.

Police arrested the suspect, a 30-year-old Chelsea man, for domestic assault and he was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case was submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and a charge of domestic assault was authorized before he was arraigned.

Manchester man arrested for out-of-town warrant
On March 26 at 8 a.m., a hit and run occurred in the 500 block of South Main Street, and while Chelsea Police looked for the suspect, he was located in a nearby parking lot.

A computer check revealed the 22-year-old driver from Manchester had a suspended driver’s license and was currently wanted on traffic-related warrants out of Blackman Township, according to the police report.

He was arrested and transported to the Jackson County line to meet with Blackman Township Police.

No charges will be filed by Chelsea Police, according to the police report, because damage to the two vehicles involved in the hit-and-run was minor.

Woman driving, acting erratically stopped by police
On March 25 at about midnight, police observed a driver pull into a parking lot, attempt to make a U-turn, and stop before pulling back out at the corner of South Main Street and Old US-12.

Police watched the driver for “a period of time” according to the police report, then made contact with her with emergency lights flashing.

The driver, a 52-year-old Brooklyn woman, was asked if she’d been drinking and she confirmed police suspicions. She told police she was having personal problems according to the police report.

The woman was asked to perform standard field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

She refused to submit to a blood draw for chemical analysis, so a search warrant was obtained.

The driver was then transported by ambulance to the hospital for an unrelated medical issue.

Case is open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police crime lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Multiple larceny-from-auto complaints reported
On March 22 at about 3 p.m., Chelsea Police received multiple larceny-from-auto complaints from residents in the 500 block of Maywood, 600 block of Taylor Street, 200 block of Lincoln Street and 100 block of Pierce Street.

These incidents are all in the same neighborhood.

The thefts were all believed to have taken place during the evening of March 21 through the early morning hours of March 22.

There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicles and no one had observed a suspect in the area, according to the police report.

Reported missing were loose change, sunglasses, prescription medication and headphones.

Multiple other area residents called police to say that they believed their vehicles had been entered and may have had items missing but some people opted not to make an official report about the incident.

Chelsea Police urge residents to lock their vehicles and remove valuables, especially during overnight hours when these incidents tend to take place.

53-year-old Chelsea man taken to hospital for intoxication
On March 11 at about 12:30 a.m., police were called to a parking lot in the 1200 block of South Main Street for a report of an intoxicated male.

Police found him sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

“The officers noted a strong odor of alcohol on his person and could visually tell that the subject was highly intoxicated,” according to the police report.

The officers performed standard field sobriety tests, and due to his blood alcohol concentration, deemed it medically necessary that he be taken to St. Joseph Chelsea hospital, according to the police report.

There, a chemical analysis of his blood level and “treatment for alcohol intoxication over a medically accepted limit” took place, the report states.

The case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office once chemical analysis has been completed by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.

Additionally, he was found to be in possession of a licensed semi-automatic pistol while under the influence of alcohol, which is against Michigan Law. This information also will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for authorization.

Assault and battery reported
On March 10 at about 3:40 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street for a report of an assault and battery.

Upon arrival, the officers met with the victim, who stated that the suspect, a 27-year-old Kalamazoo man, had fled the area traveling eastbound on I-94.

The victim told police a young female had come in to pay for some gas and cigars but did not have her driver’s license. The clerk refused to sell her the cigars, believing she was underage.

She left the store, and a male, believed to have been with the young woman, entered the store “visibly upset” that the clerk would not sell her the cigars, according to the police report.

The suspect showed his ID and the victim started to process his order, however, according to the police report, because of the man’s demeanor, she decided to not sell him the cigars and handed back the money to the suspect.

At that point, according to the police report, the suspect grabbed the attendant’s wrist and screamed at her. She resisted, attempted to get free from his grip. He let go and fled the area.

The victim stated that she was scared he might attack her again.

The man was located at a nearby gas station and was interviewed regarding the incident.

The case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office for a charge of assault and battery.

Identity theft reported
On March 9 at about noon, a man who from in the 300 block of Fairways Lane, told police he’d been contacted by Macy’s credit department for verification of a $300 purchase, which the victim said was unauthorized.

A report was created of the attempted purchase in case other unauthorized purchases were attempted.

At the time of the report, police have been unable to identify the identity of the suspect.

Possible malicious mailbox damage reported
On March 6 at about 5:20 p.m., police took a report involving a damaged mailbox in the 5000 block of Sibley Road.

The victim told police that an unknown suspect mashed the mailbox between March 5-6.

At the time of the report, there are no suspects.

Grass Lake man picked up on Chelsea felony warrant
On Feb. 21 at about 9:30 p.m., a 24-year-old Grass Lake man was transported to Washtenaw County Jail after he was picked up Chelsea Police at I-94 and Clear Lake Road as a transfer from another police agency.

The man was wanted on a felony arrest warrant from Chelsea for “writing an insufficient funds check,” according to the police report.

He will be held pending his arraignment on the charge.

Malicious destruction of property reported
On Feb. 20 at about 9:40 a.m., police were called to the 1000 block of South Main Street for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The female victim told police she returned to her vehicle and found the passenger side window had been smashed out.

There were no signs that anyone got into the vehicle and nothing was taken.

The incident took place between 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Feb. 20 and there are no suspects at this time.

Bracelet, purse stolen from East Middle Street store
On Feb. 16 at 3:10 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of East Middle Street for a report of larceny from a business.

The victim told police that on Feb. 14 at about 2:35 p.m., an about 50-year-old white female with long blonde hair wearing a yellow jacket entered the store and stole a bracelet and purse.

The theft was not immediately noticed but was caught on video.

The case is closed pending any further leads.

Ypsilanti man picked up for Chelsea bench warrant
On Feb. 9 at about 2:45 p.m., Chelsea police were dispatched to the Livingston County Courthouse to pick up a 30-year-old Ypsilanti man wanted in Chelsea for an outstanding bench warrant for a 2016 embezzlement case.

The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where he will be held pending a court hearing before the judge on the case.

Woman finds purse, takes it to police department
On Jan. 30 at about 1:45 p.m., a woman found a purse on the sidewalk at the intersection of North Main and East Middle streets and brought it to the Chelsea Police Department.

The driver’s license inside was for a resident of Troy, but an attempt to find a phone number for the owner was unsuccessful.

Parking lot hit and run reported
On Jan. 30 at about 2:20 p.m., police were called to the 1100 block of South Main Street for a report of a hit and run involving a parked vehicle.

According to the police report, a vehicle was hit in the parking lot and the other vehicle fled the scene. It was described as an older model  Dodge Ram truck with tool boxes on the bed area. Local surveillance footage of the crash showed a clear image of the truck and the driver.

Further investigation revealed the driver to be a 60-year-old Grass Lake man and police were able to speak to him.

A warrant request will be sent to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash.

Identity stolen, brokerage account opened
On Jan. 31 at about 11 a.m., a woman contacted the police department to report that her identity had been stolen and a brokerage account had been opened in her name with the stolen information.

The victim told police she had not applied for this account and had no idea who may have opened it up. The account was closed and the case remains closed pending any further leads.

Fraudulent credit card account opened
On Feb. 1 at about 4:45 p.m., police were called to the 500 block of South East Street for a report of a credit card fraudulently opened in a resident’s name.

The victim said she’d been contacted by a financial institution regarding a recently opened credit card account that had been opened in her name.

No information on a suspect was available at the time of the report, but the account was believed to have been created using the Internet.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

Sunglasses stolen from West Middle Street store
On Jan. 26 at about 2:50 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of West Middle Street for a report of a “snatch and grab.”

The victim told police that a man entered the store, took a pair of sunglasses, and fled.

The suspect was seen getting into a green Honda, which went southbound on Main Street. Police located and stopped the vehicle on I-94 and the driver, a 48-year-old Jackson man, matched the suspect’s description, and was found to have a suspended driver’s license

During a search of the vehicle for possible larceny, three pairs of sunglasses were found with a value of more than $500.

The man was arrested and taken to the Chelsea Police Department for processing then released pending warrant authorization.

Store shoplifter caught, no charges sought
On Jan. 25 at about 11 a.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Main Street for a report of shoplifting.

A 29-year-old Chelsea man was questioned by police after the victim said he’d seen the suspect acting suspicious. When confronted, the man was found to have stolen a small item from the store.

The victim did not want to press charges, rather he wanted the man not to return to the store. He was released and returned home.

No charges will be sought.

Cell phone stolen
On Jan. 24 at 1:50 p.m., police were called to the 1500 block of South Main Street for a report of a stolen cell phone.

The victim told police she believed a coworker had stolen her cell phone from her coat pocket in the employee break room. She told police the suspect, a 34-year-old Brooklyn woman, had asked to use the phone, and then left work early that day.

The victim noticed the phone was missing when she left to go home for the day. She told police she tried to call her missing cell phone and that the phone had been turned off. In addition, she said she also tried calling the suspect coworker, but her phone was not being answered, either.

The case remains open pending further investigation and interviews with the suspect and other witnesses to the incident.

Counterfeit currency reported
On Jan. 11 at about 9 a.m., police were called to the 1000 block of South Main Street for a report of counterfeit currency.

According to the police report, the victim told police that on Jan. 10 at about 6:50 p.m., two men were in line together and each paid for a $1 item with a $50 bill.

The bills appeared to be $1 bills that had been washed and had $50 printed on them; both bills had identical serial numbers.

According to the police report, the bills had not been determined to be counterfeit until the suspects had left the area.

Video surveillance revealed one suspect was a light-skinned black male wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, and suspect number two was described as being a thin-build black male wearing khaki pants, red shirt and wearing a light-colored handkerchief around his head and hair.

The counterfeit bills were taken as evidence and will be submitted to the US Secret Service for analysis.

The case was closed pending any further information on the identity of the suspects.

Identity theft reported
On Jan. 2 at about 3:40 p.m., police took a report from a resident in the 400 Block of Shiloh Drive of identity theft.

The male victim told people his identity had been used to open up a fraudulent ATT service account.

The case was closed pending any further identification on a suspect.

License plate stolen
On Jan. 4 at 7:25 p.m. police were called to the 300 block of Wilkinson Street for a report of a stolen license plate.

The victim told police that the plate had been stolen sometime between Dec. 31, 2017 and Jan. 4, 2018, but had no information on who may have stolen it.

The incident was closed due to lack of investigative leads.
