38-year-old Chelsea woman arrested for DUI

On Dec. 30 at about 12:43 a.m., police were called to the intersection of North Freer Road and Washington Street for a report of a possible drunk driver.

A Jeep was reported swerving all over the road and at one point stopping in the road for approximately 30 seconds.

Police found the vehicle in the 200 block of Washington Street parked in a driveway. Police found the vehicle still running and the rear windows were partially down. There was a white female sitting in the driver’s seat slumped over and passed out or sleeping.

Police knocked on the window and the driver, a 38-year-old Chelsea woman, eventually responded. She admitted to having “a bit” to drink.

Police noticed a strong odor of intoxicants emanating from the driver and she was asked to step out of the vehicle and perform standard field sobriety tests. She was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

A request for the suspect to submit to a portable breath test was denied as was a request to voluntarily submit to a blood alcohol analysis.

Police obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s blood and she was transported to the Chelsea Hospital for a blood draw.

The woman was processed and taken to Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office.

47-year-old Grass Lake man arrested for DUI

On Dec. 24 at about 12:13 a.m., police were called to the 1300 block of Auston Lane for a report of a pick-up truck that was driving on lawns.

Police found the vehicle and performed a traffic stop. Inside was a 47-year-old Grass Lake man, who told police he was trying to go “back home” and seemed generally confused about what was happening.

The driver told the officer that he had not had anything to drink. The officer asked the driver if he would step out of the vehicle and perform some standard field sobriety tests and he agreed.

After submitting to a portable breath test, the suspect was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs. He agreed to a blood draw to determine his level of intoxication and was transported to the Chelsea Hospital. At the conclusion of the blood draw, the suspect was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and warrant review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

North Main Street store front smashed by rock

On Dec. 22 at about noon, police were called to the 400 block of N. Main Street for a report of a malicious destruction of property.

The victim told police one of his front windows to his business had been broken.

The window was described as being approximately 6-foot by 6-foot and had an approximately 1-foot wide hole broken through it. A large rock was found on the sidewalk directly below the window.

The incident took place sometime between Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. and Dec. 22 around 11:10 a.m.

At the time of the report, there was no suspect information available.

Malicious destruction of property reported on Chestnut Street

 On Dec. 21 at about 9 p.m., police were called to the 50 block of Chestnut for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The home owners told police that they were inside the house watching TV at approximately 9 p.m. when they heard a loud noise, possibly of glass breaking.

Since the blinds were drawn, they could not see outside to tell who or what may have caused the noise. A small hole had penetrated both panes of glass in the approximate the size of a BB or a pellet.

No sign of the projectile was found.

A canvas of the neighborhood turned up no witnesses and the case was closed pending any further leads.

Larceny from building

On Dec. 21 at about 2:15 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Commerce Park Dr. for a report of a larceny from a building complaint.

The victim told police she’d left the room where she has been living at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 20 and went to work.

When she returned at midnight on Dec. 21, she noticed that several items in her living area seemed out of place. The victim told the officer that $40 was missing as well as a piece of jewelry that was a family heirloom.

The case remains open pending further investigation. 

Unlawful entry of a vehicle, nothing taken

On Dec. 17 at about 7:50 a.m., police were called to the 1500 block of Commerce Park Dr. for a report of an unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.

The victim told police that she parked her vehicle in the parking lot and dropped her child off and when she returned to her vehicle, she noticed that her lunch bag was thrown onto the driver’s rear floorboard and her laptop bag was open.

She told police that she’d left the vehicle unlocked and was away from the vehicle from 7:15-7:20 a.m.

Nothing was taken and the case was closed pending further leads.

Chelsea woman reports possible credit card scam

On Dec. 9 at 4:45 p.m., police met with a resident from the 40 block of Butternut Court who said she was tricked into a credit card scam.

The victim told police she’d been contacted on the internet by a female who said she was from Russia and needed help getting some packages shipped to her.

The victim said that she received three packages and when she went to print out the pre-paid shipping labels, she noticed that the packages were not being sent to Russia, instead were being shipped to an address in New Jersey.

The complainant also noted that the packages had different names on the shipping labels.

A check of the packages revealed approximately $1,000 in various items that were ordered from multiple online retailers, possibly with stolen credit cards.

The case remains open pending some further investigation and attempts to make contact with some of the people involved.

TV stolen from garage

On Dec. 7 at about 3:45 p.m., police were called to the 600 block of Fairways Lane for a report of the theft of a 60” LED Television that was recently purchased and still in the box.

The TV was reported to be sitting up against the interior wall of the garage. The complainant stated that sometime possibly between Dec. 4-6, someone entered the attached garage and took the LED TV.

It is unknown how or exactly when the suspect gained access to the garage, but there were no visible signs of forced entry.

Domestic assault between father and son

On Nov. 30 at about 6:20 p.m., police were called to the 300 block of Garfield Street for a report of a domestic violence complaint involving a father and son.

Upon arrival, the officers made contact with the father who told police he and his son had gotten into an argument.

The father told police the argument began as an verbal argument that then turned physical and his son grabbed him and took him to the ground.

The son then broke a plate and damaged an exterior door to the house before leaving the home on foot.

The 22-year-old Chelsea man was found standing near a tree a short distance from the residence. He was placed under arrest for domestic assault and was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

A two-count warrant was authorized for assault and battery and malicious destruction of property. 

73-year-old Chelsea man arrested for DUI

On Nov. 28 at about 2:30 pm., police noticed an equipment violation on a vehicle at Cavanaugh Lake Road and Cleveland Street.

Police followed the vehicle and noticed that it was swaying left to right and was going slowly.

The officer stopped the driver, a 73-year-old Chelsea man, and noticed the smell of alcohol emanating from him. He was asked to step out of the vehicle and perform some standard field sobriety tests.

At the conclusion of the tests and the portable breath test results, the suspect was placed under arrest and transported to the hospital for blood samples.

He was then transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where he was held.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis of the blood samples and a review of the case by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

40-year-old Chelsea man arrested for suspected DUI

On Nov. 18 at about 3:20 p.m., police were called to the 600 block of McKinley Street for a vehicle crash that involved a possibly impaired driver.

When officers arrived, they located one of the people involved but the second person had walked away from the scene.

He was found nearby and returned to the scene where he had trouble standing and had slurred speech according to the police report.

The 40-year-old Chelsea man had difficulty comprehending the conversation with the officer and refused to perform either standard sobriety tests or take a portable breath test.

He was arrested and transported to the Chelsea Police Department for being under the influence, where he also refused to have a blood analysis taken at the hospital.

A search warrant for the suspect’s blood was requested to the on-call Magistrate and the request was granted.

The suspect was transported to the Chelsea Hospital for the blood draw and then was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending results from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Tools reported stolen from construction site

On Nov. 22 at about 7 a.m., police were called to the 800 block of W. Middle Street for a report of larceny of tools from a construction site.

The victim told police that the theft occurred between Nov. 13-21 as during that time multiple tools were discovered missing and believed to be stolen.

The victim suspected a new hire to the construction crew, but when officers contacted the suspect, he denied any knowledge of or involvement in the missing tools.

The case remains open pending further investigation and potential submittal to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Larceny from auto reported

On Nov. 10 at 6:45 p.m., police were called to the 900 block of S. Main Street for a report of a larceny from an auto complaint.

The victim told police on Nov. 9 he was getting gas in the 900 block of S. Main Street and afterward noticed that his cell phone along with license and credit cards were missing from the vehicle.

The credit cards were immediately cancelled, but a check for the cell phone’s current location using GPS yielded negative results.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

Man refuses to leave property

On Nov. 10 at about 1:55 a.m., police were called to the 700 block of S. Main Street for refusing to leave the property.

The 50-year-old Ann Arbor man said he was homeless and had nowhere to go. The officer assisted with packing up the man’s belongings and gave a courtesy transport to a church in Ann Arbor that had been assisting him previously.

The man was told the complainant wished to issue a trespassing notice and advised him not to come back onto the property.

Larceny from a building

On Nov. 7 at about 6 p.m. police were called to the 100 block of S. Main Street for a report of a larceny from a building.

The victim told police she was at the cash register at a local business when three customers came in together and began walking around the store.

The three appeared to know each other, according to the police report, and two of them drew the victim away from the front counter area for a short period of time.

About an hour or two later, the victim received a call from her bank asking if she had just been to the Wal-Mart in Saline and made any purchases.

The victim checked her purse and discovered the card was missing along with three other credit cards and approximately $350 in cash.

The fraudulent credit card purchases totaled approximately $1,300.

Two of the suspects have been preliminarily identified as a 47-year-old Pontiac woman and a 44-year-old Detroit woman.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

Attempted larceny reported

On Oct. 30 at about 4:30 p.m., police got a call about an attempted larceny from an auto that had occurred sometime overnight into the early morning hours of Oct. 30 in the 300 block of Fairways Lane.

The victim told police that upon approaching the vehicle, it was discovered that the glove box and center console of the vehicle had been ransacked.

Nothing appeared to have been taken from the vehicle.

Larceny from an auto

On Oct. 30 at about 3:20 in the 600 block of Park Lane Road, police took a complaint about a larceny from an auto.

The victim told police that between Oct. 29 at 9:15 pm and Oct. 30 at 7:45 a.m., and unknown suspect entered his vehicle and went through the glove box and center console.

The victim told police that a $20 bill and his debit card had been taken. Subsequently, it was determined that the debit card had been used at two area McDonalds locations.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

Larceny from an auto

Police responded to the 600 block of Fairways Lane on Oct. 30 at about 8:45 a.m. for a report of a larceny for an auto complaint.

The victim told police that he went to his vehicle in the morning hours of Oct. 30 and discovered that his glovebox and center console area had been opened and items were taken out of their proper spots.Nothing was missing.

A nearby neighbor’s surveillance camera showed what appears to be a male suspect possibly a younger-aged, medium build male, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

The suspect can be observed walking by some vehicles in the driveway possibly an attempt to see what is in the vehicles and/or checking to see if the vehicles are locked.

The suspect is observed at around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 30.

Milan woman wanted on Chelsea warrant arrested

On Oct. 21 at about 10:30 a.m., Chelsea police were notified by Michigan State Police that they had arrested a 43-year-old old Milan woman wanted on a Chelsea warrant.

The woman failed to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult.

Chelsea Police picked-up the woman at US-23 at Plank Road and transported her to the Washtenaw County Jail where she will be held pending arraignment on the charges.

Police investigate reported assault

On Oct. 18 at about 4:30, police were called to the 600 block of E. Industrial Dr. for a report of an assault that had happened about 30 minutes prior.

Upon arrival, the officer spoke to the complainant who stated that the shift supervisor had been assaulted by the suspect, a 52-year-old Tecumseh man, who had since been terminated and left the area.

According to the police report, the complainant was worried about a comment made by the suspect that he “would be back to finish this.”

The victim had been punched in the face by the suspect during an altercation that took place because of a workplace dispute about whether a job would be eliminated.

The victim stated that he did not wish to prosecute, but did want the assault documented in case the suspect came back to work or caused any further issues. The case was closed by the officer.

Malicious destruction of property reported

On Oct. 13 at about 8:45 p.m., police were called to the 200 block of Harrison Street for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The victim told police he was at home and heard a loud smashing noise outside. He looked outside and saw a person known to him from previous disputes. The victim said the suspect, later identified as a 23-year-old Jackson man, looked at him and smiled and then smashed the rear window and another rearview mirror of his vehicle and left.

Both of the Chelsea man’s rearview mirrors as well as the rear window of the vehicle were smashed during the incident. The victim told police there was an ongoing dispute over the suspect’s vehicle that was previously damaged in Jackson.

The case remains open pending warrant submission and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office. 

Retail fraud reported

On Oct. 7 at about 5:30 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of S. Main Street for a report of retail fraud.

The complainant told police she had observed a female subject enter the store, look around and later take a butterfly ornament on display near the front door before leaving the store.

The action was caught on a surveillance camera and the officer took a screenshot of the suspect to multiple downtown businesses and located another business that recognized the suspect who was later identified as a 60-year-old Ann Arbor woman.

The case remains open pending review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for a charge of retail fraud.

Credit card fraud

On Sept. 25 at about 10 p.m., police were called to the 900 block of S. Main Street for a report of credit card fraud.

According to the police report, the fraud had taken place about 6 hours earlier.

The victim told police that two subjects came into the establishment and purchased some beverages as well as some instant lottery tickets.

The subjects completed two separate transactions for the items totaling over $800 using a credit card, and it was later determined that the credit card was fraudulent and rejected.

The case remains closed pending any further investigative leads on a potential suspect.

Ann Arbor man arrested for DUI

On Sept. 21 at about midnight, police were called to the 900 block of South Main Street for the report of a suspicious person, who was possibly intoxicated or sleeping in his vehicle at the gas pump.

Upon arrival, the officers located the vehicle and observed a man in the driver’s seat leaning out of the vehicle vomiting while the vehicle was running.

The officers immediately smelled alcohol and asked the man what was wrong.

The 19-year-old Ann Arbor man told police he had food poisoning. The officers looked into the vehicle and saw an open case of beer in the back seat as well as a bottle of vodka.

He was asked to perform standard field sobriety tests and take a portable breath that showed a reading of .223 percent.

The suspect was placed under arrest and was transported to the hospital for a blood alcohol analysis.

Once the blood sample was obtained the officer transported the man to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police and warrant review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office. 

Fraud reported  

On Sept. 19 at about 5:45 p.m., people were called to the 1100 block of S. Main Street for the report of a fraud/swindle.

The employee told police a man with a thick accent requested change for $100 bills in $50 bills. The suspect then asked to change that money into Australian currency and was told foreign currency was not available.

The suspect then stated that since he could not get the foreign currency, he wanted his original $100 bills back. The employee complied and then approximately one hour later when she was balancing out the cash drawer, she realized that she was short a large amount of money.

The shortage of money was not determined until about an hour after the suspect had left the area.

Video footage showed the suspect pocketed half of the $50 bills and handed the rest back to the complainant and then got his original $100 bills back as well.

At the time of complaint, no suspect vehicle description was able to be obtained.

Police pick up Jackson man wanted on warrant

On Sept. 6, at about 3:45 p.m., police were called to the Jackson County jail to pick up a Jackson man wanted out of Chelsea on a larceny warrant for a 2018 larceny charge.

The 65-year-old Jackson man was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where he will be held pending his court date on the larceny charge.

Dog fight

On Sept. 3 at about 9:43 a.m., police received several phone calls about a dog fight in the 200 block of Harrison Street.

A woman was walking her dog when another dog ran up to the woman and the dog on leash and a fight ensured.

The woman walking her dog contacted police and police then contacted the owner of the loose dog.

The victim said she was not injured by the dog but did get a leash burn on her hand from having to hold onto the leash so tightly. She also said her dog panicked when the dog ran up to them and began biting the offending dog.

The case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review on a charge of failing to have an animal under reasonable control.

Wallet left at business results in theft of money

On Aug. 31 at about 3 p.m., police took a report about money taken from a wallet.

The victim told people she left her wallet somewhere on the business’s property in the 1600 block of S. Main Street at around 11 a.m. on Aug. 31.

When she realized her wallet was missing at around 1:40 p.m. on the same date, she told police she called the business.

According to the police report, an employee answered and stated that the wallet was at the front counter and had been found outside of the building in the parking lot.

The victim drove back to the business to retrieve it to find three $100 bills were missing and only $7 in cash was still in the wallet.

At the time of the report, there were no potential suspects. An investigator will follow up with the business manager, who is the only one with access to the video surveillance footage, according to the police report.

Case remains open pending review of any available surveillance footage.

Items stolen from vehicle

On Aug. 25 at about 1:30 p.m., police were called to the 600 block of Park Lane Road for a report of a theft of a cell phone, phone charger and earbud-style headphones that had been taken out of a vehicle.

There was no sign of forced entry and the theft was believed to have occurred sometime in the early morning hours of Aug. 25.  

Traffic to blame for dispute

On Aug. 21 at 9:55 p.m. police were called to the 20000 block of W. Old US-12 for 911 reports of a disturbance in the parking lot.

Officers spoke to the complainant who stated that she had been yelling at another motorist over a traffic dispute and the front seat passenger spit in her face.

After talking with the driver of the vehicle and the suspect passenger, a 30-year-old Dexter man, they both stated that the complainant had hit their window with her hand, which caused the passenger to reciprocate and spit in the complainant’s face.

The officer noted no damage to the window on the vehicle that was hit.

The complainant stated that she wished to pursue criminal charges on the suspect.

The case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office to determine what, if any charges, may be warranted.

Malicious destruction of property reported

On Aug. 21 at about 8:45 a.m., police were called to the 1600 block of S. Main Street for a report of a malicious destruction of property complaint.

The complainant stated that sometime between the hours of 6 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 7:20 a.m. on Aug. 21, an unknown suspect smashed a single window on two separate RV’s that were parked in the parking lot.

A piece of wood was found inside laying near the broken window indicating that is what was used to break the windows.

An inventory of the vehicles revealed that nothing had been taken or disturbed inside the RV’s.

Case closed pending any further leads.

Wanted 19-year-old Chelsea man turned over to Pinckney police

On Aug. 14 at about 1 a.m. in the 200 block of W. North St., police picked up a 19-year-old Chelsea man who they recognized as being wanted by Pinckney police for failing to appear in court.

Police saw him attempting to flag down passing vehicles after having car trouble.

The man was wanted in Pinckney for a driving-related violation and failure to appear in court.

He was arrested and transported north of town and turned over to the Pinckney Police Department.

The vehicle was left in the parking lot until he could arrange to have it moved.

Intoxicated behavior leads to arrest on probation violation

On Aug. 4 at about 9:30 p.m., police were called to the 900 block of South Main street for a report of an intoxicated man.

According to the police report, the 58-year-old Ypsilanti man was found by police in the parking lot and once identified, it was determined that he was wanted by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department for a probation violation on an aggravated domestic violence charge.

He was arrested and transported to I-94 and Baker Road before being turned over to sheriff’s officers.

Erratic driving leads to arrest of man wanted for felony drug charge

On Aug. 5 at about 4 p.m., police were alerted to a motorist who might be driving under the influence.

The caller identified the vehicle as a tan Mercury Grand  Marquis and gave police the license plate number. Police found the vehicle in the 500 block of South Main Street and subsequently located the driver, a 40-year-old Ann Arbor resident, who was wanted on a felony drug charge by the state police.

The man was turned over to a state trooper and he was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail.

Car stolen from South Main Street

On Aug. 1 at about 4:30 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street for a larceny of a motor vehicle.

The victim told police that sometime between July 29-Aug. 1, a Ford Focus had been stolen from his property.

The victim told police that the vehicle belonged to the business and was used for making short infrequent trips by his employees.

The vehicle, as well as the dealer license plate that was attached, was entered into the computer system as being stolen.

There are currently no suspects.

Wanted suspect transferred to Chelsea Police Department

On July 28, Chelsea Police met with Columbia Township law enforcement for the transfer of a suspect wanted for a driving violation.

The suspect, a 60-year-old Brooklyn man, was transferred to Chelsea Police custody and was lodged in the Washtenaw County jail where he will be held pending arraignment on city charges for driving-related violation including driving while license suspended.

Man wanted for gas theft

On July 25 at about 10:30 p.m. police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street for a report of a larceny of gasoline.

The complainant told police that the suspect had entered the store, left a credit card to pay for fuel and went back outside to pump it.

According to the police report, after several minutes the attendant looked out and noticed that the suspect’s vehicle was no longer in the lot and that the pump was laying on the ground.

The attendant attempted to run the credit card provided and it was declined. After later reviewing video surveillance footage it was determined that the suspect drive south on M-52.

He is believed to be a 31-year-old man, possibly from the Grass Lake area.

The case remains open pending further investigation and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office.

Malicious destruction of property  

On July 23 at about 9:30 a.m., police were called to the 700 block of South Main Street for a report of malicious destruction of property.

The victim told police an unknown suspect or suspects had spray painted multiple vulgar and obscene objects and writings on the playground equipment.

Police took pictures of the paintings and added them to the incident report. City Department of Public Works employees responded to the area and were able to clean off most of the graffiti.

At the time of the report, there are no suspects and it’s unclear when the incident happened.

Vehicle stolen

On July 16 at about 6:30 a.m., police were called to the 300 block of Provincial Dr. for a report of a stolen vehicle.

The victim told police that the vehicle had been parked in the driveway the previous evening at around 9 p.m. but when she looked out the window the following morning, the vehicle was gone.

According to the police report, the vehicle was unlocked and the victim’s purse was inside.

The vehicle, a white 2012 Chevrolet Traverse, was entered into the computer system as stolen.

Police contacted OnStar and the system was able to track the vehicle’s location in Ypsilanti. It was remotely disabled until police could arrive.

With the help of Ypsilanti City Police, the vehicle was located parked along the road with no occupants. It was secured and transported back to the Chelsea Police Department for evidence and DNA processing.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

Multiple unlocked vehicles entered

On July 16-17 in the Chelsea Ridge, Belsar Estates, and Heritage Point subdivisions, multiple unlocked cars were opened and rummaged through. Items were tossed around and loose change was stolen as well as a wallet, purse or currency was taken.

Some of items such as identification cards, empty wallets or gym bags were recovered in nearby yards. These instances are believed to be connected with the stolen vehicle complaint and it is believed that the suspects went door to door targeting vehicles.

There were no signs of forced entry into any of the vehicles and the case remains under active investigation.

City residents are urged to remember to secure their vehicles and not leave any valuable items inside. Anyone who observes suspicious activity or persons in the area are urged to call the Chelsea Police Department at 734-475-9122 x 3 immediately and report the incident so an officer can respond to investigate.

Credit card fraud reported

On July 16 at about 4 p.m., police were called to the 1400 block of South Main St. for a report of credit card fraud.

The victim told police he was notified the morning of July 16 that some of the fraudulent credit card transactions had occurred at a gas station in Ohio. The charges were reportedly made on July 11, 12, and 15 totaled around $215

The victim notified his bank and bank officials were going to follow up on the charges.

The case was closed pending any further leads from the bank.

Medication missing

On July 17 at about 2:07 p.m., police met with a resident from the 100 block of Van Buren St. for a report of missing medication.

The victim told police that medication was mailed but was missing. The victim followed up with the pharmacy when the medication did not arrive.

According to the police report, the medication was delivered on June 6 and the postal service confirmed that it had been delivered on June 8.

However, it was not determined until July 17th that the medication had never been received.

An incident report was taken to document the theft, no suspect information or date of theft was able to be determined.

Malicious destruction of property

On July 20 at about 11:50 p.m., police were called to the 100 block of S. Main St. for a report of a malicious destruction of property.

The victim told police that he parked his pickup truck near his place of work at around 5 p.m. and when he got out of work at 11:50 p.m. he said he noticed that 3 of the 4 tires were completely flat.

It was determined that the valve stems had been tampered with causing the tires to go flat and the bead seal was broken so they were not able to be inflated.

There were no suspects at the time of the report.

19-year-old Dexter man arrested for DWI

On July 14 at about 4:15 a.m. in the 14000 block of E. Old US-12, police found a vehicle partially in the ditch.

The driver told police he was attempting to turn his vehicle around in the road and went too far off the shoulder and slid into the ditch, according to the police report.

When asked by police why he was trying to turn around, the 19-year-old Dexter driver told police that “he felt as if he shouldn’t be driving any longer,” according to the police report.

The officer asked the driver if he had consumed any alcohol and he stated that he had one large beer approximately 4 hours prior.

The officer asked the driver to perform some standard field sobriety tests and the driver complied.

At the conclusion of the tests, a portable breath test was issued and gave a result .093 percent Blood Alcohol Content. The officers asked the driver if he had consumed any other alcohol because that result was not consistent with the amount of alcohol that he had said that he had consumed.

The driver also stated that he had a few “Jell-O shots” at the party along with his beer. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the hospital for a blood analysis.

At the completion of the blood draw, he was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

57-year-old Jackson man arrested for DUI

On June 29 at about 9:30 p.m., police received a tip from dispatch regarding a blue Kia traveling southbound on M-52 heading into town that was reported as driving erratically.

Police observed a vehicle matching that description driving south and began following behind it. After witnessing the vehicle veer across the center line, police stopped the car. Behind the wheel was a 57-year-old Jackson man.

Upon making contact with the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of intoxicants, noted that the driver’s speech was slurred, and that he fumbled around as he looked for his vehicle’s documentation.

The officer asked the driver if he had consumed any alcohol and he stated that he had. Police asked him to perform some standard field sobriety tests and a portable breath test.

The man was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and taken to Chelsea Hospital for a blood draw to determine his blood alcohol level and then was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case was left open pending return of the lab results and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Cell phone stolen from vehicle on Book Street

On June 27 at about 2:30 p.m., police were called to the 800 block of Book Street for a report of a stolen cell phone.

The victim said he’d been playing baseball and had left his iPhone in his unlocked vehicle. Upon returning to his vehicle, he noticed that the phone was gone. The complainant used the “Find My IPHONE” application and tracked the phone to the area of East and Summit streets.

It was determined that the location of the phone was too unreliable to proceed any further.

The incident was closed pending any further leads.

Money taken from wallet on West Middle Street

On June 22 at about 7:30 p.m., police were called to the 800 block of W. Middle St., for a report of missing money from a wallet.

The victim told police she had been transported to the hospital for a medical issue but packed all of her items in a plastic bag including her wallet.

When she got back to her room, she found her wallet was in disarray and items were out of place. In addition, she noticed that three $20 bills were missing.

The victim said she last time she saw the money was on June 15, but believes the theft occurred during her hospital trip.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

Items taken from car  on Fairways Lane

On June 22 at about 11:30 a.m., police were called to the 500 block of Fairways Lane for a report of a larceny from an auto.

The victim told police that it had occurred at some point between June 18 at 7 p.m. and June 19 at 8 a.m. Taken were approximately $5 in miscellaneous change, fingernail clippers, keys and a leather-bound planner.

There were no signs of forced entry and the case was closed pending additional leads.

Mailbox stolen

On June 20 at about 11:45 a.m., a resident from the 500 block of Park Lane Road arrived at the police department to report that his mailbox had been stolen off the post.

According to the police report, the mailbox was broken off the post and taken.

There are no suspects at this time.  

Car broken into on Fairways Lane

Chelsea police were alerted to a car break-in on June 19 at about 6:45 a.m. in the 600 block of Fairways Lane.

The victim told police that she parked her vehicle in her driveway on June 18 at around 10:30 a.m. and when she got back into it on June 19 around 5:30 a.m., she found her glove box and center console appeared to have been rummaged through.

A gray carrying bag that had been on the passenger seat was missing.

Unknown other miscellaneous items may have been taken as well but an accounting of those items could not be determined at the time of the report.

There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle and the case was closed pending any further leads.

Man wanted on misdemeanor warrant arrested

On June 14 at about 3:16 p.m., Chelsea Police met Jackson Police off Clear Lake Road to pick up a 26-year-old Jackson man who was wanted for a misdemeanor warrant out of Chelsea.

The suspect was wanted on a misdemeanor warrant for retail fraud.

The Jackson man was fingerprinted and lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail where he will be held pending arraignment on the charge.

Credit card fraud reported

On June 4 at about 11:40 a.m., police were called to the 200 block of Quiet Creek Ct for a report of a credit card fraud/identity theft that occurred in Virginia.

The victim told police that he noticed a fraudulent ATM transaction had taken place in Virginia for $203 on May 29, 2019.

The victim told police he’d been in contact with his credit union and they had already refunded him his money and reissued him a new card and account.

The case was closed pending any further details leading to the identity of the suspect.

Two instances of ATM fraud

On May 29 at 10 a.m., a man went to the Chelsea Police Department to report fraudulent charges on his ATM card.

The victim told police that he was doing a routine check of his bank accounts, and noticed an ATM transaction in Virginia for $402.75. Neither he nor his wife had been in Virginia so he told police he’d immediately notified his bank.

Later in the afternoon, a Sylvan Township resident went to the Chelsea Police Department to report an identical type of theft, but her account showed two transactions totaling approximately $805.

Both victims had the same financial institution and the ATM transactions occurred in Virginia.

The second person was advised to report her fraudulent transactions to the Michigan State Police that has police jurisdiction for the Sylvan Township area.

There are no suspects at this time.

Vehicle ‘keyed’ on South Main Street

On May 20 at about 4:45 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of S. Main St. for a report of a vehicle that had been keyed.

The victim told police that he parked his vehicle in the parking lot at approximately 7:45 a.m. and went into work.

At about 1 p.m., he went out to his vehicle to eat his lunch and noted that the vehicle had no damage at that time. But when he returned at about 4:30 p.m., there was an about 18-inch, “very deep” scratch in the paint on the driver-side door.

The victim told police he parks his vehicle in the back of the parking lot to prevent accidental damage, and had no idea who might have caused the damage.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

Assault and battery reported

Police were called to the 900 block of S. Main St. on May 2 at about 10 p.m. for a report of assault and battery.

The victim told police he was inside a rest room cleaning it when he heard a knock on the door. He told the person to wait a minute while he finished cleaning and when he opened the door, the suspect confronted him.

According to the police report, the suspect began berating the employee about making him wait and when the employee tried to get around the suspect, the suspect punched the victim in the face causing damage to the victim’s glasses and minor injuries to the victim’s face.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing dark pants, dark sweatshirt with bright stripes down the sleeves and he had a full beard. The suspect was seen getting into a four-door vehicle of an unknown make or model and fled southbound on Main Street.

Multiple catalytic convertors stolen

On April 29 at about 8 p.m., police were called to the 800 block of W. Middle St. for a report of a stolen catalytic convertor.

The victim said she’d taken her vehicle to a mechanic because the vehicle didn’t seem to be running right and was excessively loud.

The mechanic called her and said the catalytic convertor had been cut from beneath the vehicle and stolen.

The victim stated that she believed the theft happened sometime between April 22 and 29.

The Chelsea Police Department also received two other catalytic converter thefts from the same location around the same time period and reported on the same date.

All incidents at this same location are filed under the same incident report. There are currently no suspects for any of the thefts.

Then on April 30 at about 1:26 p.m., police were called to the 700 block of W. Middle Street for a report of another stolen catalytic converter.

This victim told police that his vehicle was parked in the parking lot of his apartment and was running fine on April 28 and when he returned to his vehicle the following morning, he noticed that his vehicle was “very loud”.

The complainant took his vehicle to the mechanic shop and they called him and told him that his catalytic converter had been cut off and stolen. There are currently no known suspects for the theft.

Purse taken from N. Main Street restaurant

On April 28 at about 6:50 p.m., a woman reported her purse had been stolen from a booth in a restaurant in the 300 block of N. Main Street.

She told police about a half hour after leaving the location, she realized she’d forgotten her purse.

She notified the restaurant, but employees were unable to find the purse.

There are no leads on a potential suspect.

Money stolen from wallet stolen in South Main Street business

On April 27 at about 5:45 p.m., a woman flagged down police and told them her wallet had been stolen from a business in the 1200 block of S. Main Street.

She told police that she’d been shopping and stopped at the coffee grinding station and put her wallet and keys down near the grinding machine, according to the police report.

When she was done, her wallet and keys were gone. She alerted customer service and began searching for the wallet. Shortly thereafter, both items were found in the women’s rest room.

The woman said $70 in cash had been stolen out of the wallet but nothing else was missing.

The case remains open pending further investigation and review of the surveillance footage.

Munith man arrested for multiple motor vehicle violations

On April 24 at about 11:30 a.m., police noticed a parked vehicle with an invalid and improper license plate parked in a lot in the 800 block of W. Middle Street.

Police watched for the driver of the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

The 51-year-old Munith man did not have a valid driver’s license and the vehicle did not have a valid registration or insurance.

He was taken to the Chelsea Police Department for processing and was turned over to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department for an unrelated charge of violation of a conditional bond release order.

The case for the charge of driving on a suspended license will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review and charge authorization.

40-year-old Ypsilanti man arrested for DUI

On April 22 at about 2 a.m. in the 1600 block of South Main St., police found a man either sleeping or passed out in a parked vehicle in the parking lot.

According to the police report, the vehicle was still running and in gear and the driver’s foot was on the brake.

The vehicle was unlocked so police were able to reach in and put the vehicle in park, turn off the car and wake the driver.

Police observed an almost empty bottle of vodka sitting next to the driver in a cup holder.

The 40-year-old Ypsilanti man was asked to perform standard field sobriety tests, and was then arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to the hospital for a blood alcohol analysis, and medical staff opted to keep the suspect for further medical evaluation.

The blood will be submitted to the Michigan State Police for laboratory analysis and upon receiving the results, the case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for warrant review authorization.

66-year-old Chelsea man arrested for suspected DUI

On April 14 at about 1:35 a.m., a 66-year-old Chelsea man was arrested while traveling west in a white Chevrolet pick-up truck on Old US-12 after he was pulled over for erratic driving.

The man admitted to police that “he’d had a few” and was on his way home from a local bar, according to the police report.

He was asked to perform standard sobriety tests and was unsuccessful.

He was transported to the hospital for a blood analysis and then to the Chelsea Police Department for fingerprinting.

He was then taken to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Instant lottery tickets reported stolen from West Middle Street

On April 13 at about 7:29 p.m., police responded to the 800 block of W. Middle St. for a report of a theft of instant lottery tickets.

Upon arrival, the officer met with staff as well as the victim who stated that sometime in the past couple of days an unknown suspect(s) entered her room and took three instant lottery tickets as well as some miscellaneous documents, according to the police report.

The victim stated that the tickets had already been scratched and all three were winning tickets. The victim stated that she believed that the theft had occurred sometime between April 11-12.

The estimated value of the missing items was about $50.

At the time of the report, there were no suspects, and the case is closed pending further leads.

Driver on restricted license stopped for speeding

On April 6 at about 12:20 a.m., police stopped a vehicle that was speeding in the 500 block of N. Main Street.

Stopped was a white car traveling 48 m.p.h. in a 25 m.p.h. zone, which was being driven by a 19-year-old Dexter Township man.

When asked for his license, registration and proof of insurance, he was not able to produce the vehicle’s registration.

According to the police report, the driver told police that he was currently on probation and had a restricted license, which only allowed him to drive to and from work.

The driver was given a warning on the speed and issued a ticket for no registration.

The driver was advised that the case would be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for authorization on a misdemeanor charge of violation of a restricted license.

Propane cylinders stolen from South Main Street

On March 28 at about 6:45 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street  for a report of the theft of two 20-pound propane cylinders.

The victim told police that the cylinders had been removed from their designated holding area on the front tongue of a travel trailer.

Video surveillance showed the suspect is a white male wearing blue jeans and a royal blue hooded sweatshirt.

The case was closed pending any further leads.

Older couple accused of retail fraud 

On March 28 at about 1:07 p.m., police were called to the 1200 block of South Main Street for the report of a retail fraud in progress.

Upon arrival, police spoke to the suspects, a 82-year-old Pinckney woman and a 74-year-old Pinckney man, who had been followed out the door by store employees.

The employees told police they’d been alerted to the pair who were spotted stealing multiple items.

A witness told employees that the female put items from the fresh meat area into some store shopping bags, which were in the cart and open.

The male proceeded to tie up the bags then continued on with his shopping cart, which contained a small number of grocery items.

The female left the store without going through a checkout lane and paying for the items. The male continued to the checkout lane to pay for his items and exited the store.

Police questioned the two, asking whether they could provide proof that they had purchased the meat items. Neither had a receipt, according to the police report.

The case will be submitted to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review for retail fraud.

Chelsea Police pick-up woman wanted on 2010 warrant

On March 20 at 9:35 p.m., Chelsea police were called to the parking lot of the Meijer store off Ann Arbor Saline Road to meet with the Saline Police Department.

Saline police had picked up a 52-year-old woman who was wanted by Chelsea police for a bench warrant originating from an assault and battery complaint that occurred in 2010.

The woman was transferred to the custody of the Chelsea Police Department and was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail where she was processed and lodged at the jail.

The warrant was cancelled and the case was closed.

Michigan Center woman arrested on outstanding charges

On Feb. 27 at about 7:44 p.m., police arrested a 28-year-old Michigan Center woman in the 500 block of Coliseum Drive.

A computer check revealed she was wanted on a felony charge of possession of cocaine as well as three misdemeanor bench warrants from Jackson County and the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman was placed under arrest and transported to the I-94 Mt. Hope Road exit and turned over to Jackson County without incident.

Assault and battery reported at youth hockey game

On Feb. 21 at about 8:30 p.m., police were called to the 500 block of Coliseum Drive for the report of an assault and battery.

The officers met with two females who were reportedly involved in a physical altercation in the stands while watching a youth hockey game.

According to the police report, statements were taken from witnesses and the two women involved in the altercation.

One was a 39-year-old female from Brownstown Township and the other was a 44-year-old Dexter woman.

The case remains open currently pending the review of some video of the incident as well as submission to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Counterfeit bills passed at drive thru window

On Feb. 11 at about 11:25 p.m., police were called to the 1500 block of South Main Street for a report of counterfeit bills.

According to the police report, “The complainant stated that a silver Cadillac Escalade driven by a black male as well as possibly 3-5 black male passengers pulled through the drive thru and placed an order for $9 worth of food.”

The employee was given change for a $100 bill. The driver then proceeded to the second drive thru window and placed another order at the window for $17 worth of food and paid with another $100 bill.

According to the police report, “Prior to receiving the food from the second order, the suspects fled the area in an unknown direction.”

Because of poor lighting, further description of the suspects could not be obtained.

The counterfeit bills will be submitted to the United States Secret Service for analysis.

The case was closed pending further leads.

Counterfeit bill passed at drive thru window

On Feb. 7 at about 7:40 p.m., police were called to the 1600 block of Commerce Park Dr. for a report of a counterfeit bill.

The victim told police that the driver of a vehicle went through the drive thru window and placed a $30 order and attempted to pay for the food with a counterfeit $100 bill.

When told the money was fake, the suspect sped away.

The bill will be submitted to the United States Secret Service for any further analysis or identification.

According to the police report, there were three black males in the vehicle, which was a tan or silver-colored sedan or SUV type vehicle with possibly an out-of-state license plate.

TV stolen

On Feb. 7 at about 11:50 a.m., police were called to the 200 block of Wilkinson St. for a report of a stolen TV.

The victim told police she was not sure when the TV had been stolen but believed it went missing on Feb. 6.

The victim told police the TV was still in the box and sitting near a folded-up card table. There was no sign of forced entry into the residence and nothing else appeared to be taken.

There are no further details available at the time of the complaint.

59-year-old Chelsea man accused of writing 12 bad checks

While on routine patrol, police responded to the 1200 block of South Main Street for the report of a non-sufficient funds check complaint.

The complainant told police that a 59-year-old Chelsea man had written 12 bad checks from Nov. 17-30, 2018, and that he’d sent a registered letter attempting to collect the funds, which was unsuccessful.

Police got a search warrant for the suspect’s bank records for the checking account.

The case remains open pending submission and review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for a charge of writing three or more non-sufficient fund checks within 10 days.

Theft of wine reported

On Jan. 12 at about 9:34 p.m. police on patrol in the 1600 block of South Main Street were alerted to the theft of two bottles of wine.

An employee told police that a woman had entered the store and purchased a bottle of wine.

She was in the parking lot about to leave and returned to the store and grabbed two more bottles of wine before running back to her vehicle and fleeing the area westbound on I-94.

The suspect was described and confirmed with video surveillance as a black female driving a white Dodge Durango with unknown out of state plates.

Case was closed pending any further leads.

Berkley man arrested for DUI

On Jan. 11 at about 9:10 p.m. police were called to the 1600 block of South Main Street for a report of a potentially intoxicated man who was attempting to get gas.

The caller, a patron of the establishment, stayed on the line with dispatch until the officers arrived.

The officers observed the 36-year-old Berkley man have difficulty putting the nozzle back in to the pump and stumble backwards, losing his balance.

The man admitted to drinking and said he was also confused as to what his current location was and where he was going, according to the police report.

The vehicle the suspect was driving also had significant damage to the driver side and to the front passenger side of the vehicle.

He was asked to perform standard field sobriety tests and to take a portable breath test.  He was then arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and transported to the Chelsea hospital for a blood draw.

He was then taken to the Chelsea Police Department for booking and to the Washtenaw County Jail.

The case remains open pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.
