Professional cyclist Alexey Vermeulen, 18, will visit Aberdeen Bike & Outdoors on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

Vermeulen will talk following a month of training with his pro team in Spain, according to a press release. A Pinckney native, he rides for the development team sponsored by the Swiss bike company BMC.

He’ll share highlights from the training trip and talk about his journey from eager youngster to world class rider at the store located at 1101 S. Main.

A rising star in American cycling, Vermeulen played hockey and dabbled in triathlon before he started cycling seriously at age 14. In 2011, he won the road race at U.S. Junior Nationals, and the victory set off “a cascade of opportunities,” according to the press release.

Cycling teams started seeking him out and Vermeulen spent last summer racing and training in Europe with USA Cycling, rode in the Junior World Championships in September and signed a pro contract with BMC in December.

“The adventure he’s been on in these last couple of years is incredible,” said Mike Casey, the store’s owner, who’s enjoyed watching Vermeulen develop as a rider. “I’m excited to hear about what he’s been doing.”
