Process in place for applications to Chelsea City Boards and Commissions

Chelsea logoThe Chelsea City Council now has a defined process in place when folks apply for open board and commission seats after approving an amendment to the council rules.

Here’s an overview:

  • All open positions will be posted on the city’s website and there will be a closing date for applications.
  • The city clerk will notify residents that their application has been received.
  • All eligible applications will reviewed and forwarded to the City Council.
  • Appointments will take place at a City Council meeting and applicants may be asked questions during the meeting. Council will discuss the recommendations and may make nominations and vote on appointments in accordance with the City Charter.
  • Once a position has been filled, applicants will be notified of “the final disposition.”
  • There is also now a chart that outlines the appointment process for the Planning Commission, the Downtown Development Authority, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Human Rights Commission, Parks and Recreation and Board of Review.

The City Council also unanimously approved a power purchase for the city for 2017 and 2020 that has a maximum commitment of about $631,000 and of that amount, about $150,000 for 2017.

Typically, the city purchases about $6.5-7 million per year in power, said City Manager John Hanifan.

The city also amended its budget by $5,000 to give AATA $15,000 in funding for the 16-17 year. It had previously agreed to fund $10,000 for the bus service.

In other business, the City Council set a public hearing date for a Community Development grant for the Mack Redevelopment project. The public hearing will take place on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

This is a Community Development Block grant of $500,000. There will be $600,000 in private investment and $200,000 in Downtown Development Authority funds “to eliminate blight” and to redevelop the Mack Building at 110 Jackson Street.

Joe Ziolkowski plans to redevelop the property.

The City Council set an Oct. 17 date for a closed session evaluation of the City Manager, and a Nov. 21 work session at 6 p.m. to discuss ChelseaMich, the city’s marketing effort.  The city and the DDA are the primary funding sources for this website and marketing effort.

The City Council also set a work session for Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. to discuss the topic of transportation.
