Publisher’s column: learning from our youngest students

Sometimes the best story ideas come from the most unexpected places.

I stopped by North Creek Elementary School this week to connect with Principal Kimberly Gillow to talk about what the Young 5’s and K-2 students are learning these days.

Walking in, I had preconceived notions that there were plenty of interesting and exciting learning experiences taking place within those walls.

I was not disappointed.

And, I can’t wait to help teachers and support staff in the school tell their stories to readers. First up, some photos from the Young 5’s students who recently studied ocean creatures.

Throughout the year, students are learning Positive Behavior Expectations.

Be safe.

Be Responsible.

Be Respectful.

Be Kind.

Although our young children are learning how to deploy these simple behaviors throughout the school day, we, as adults, already understand these concepts. So, let’s all be sure to help them in our lives and lead by setting positive examples.

Each month, these young students are learning a life skill as well.

This month it’s “wait for your turn to talk.”

Let’s all follow suit, and use our “listening ears” when others are talking.
