Publisher’s column: Resolve to try something new for 2013

Courtesy photo. I spoke to the Chelsea Kiwanis Club this week about Chelsea Update and am pictured here with Kiwanis Club President Tom Ritter.

Although we’re already well into January, it’s not too late to resolve to do something fun, new, healthier, educational, faith-based or just plain different in 2013.

With all of Chelsea Update’s server problems during the end of 2012 and into 2013, I decided to designate Monday, Jan. 7 as the official start of my New Year.

Why that date?

Because that’s when I was sure that Chelsea Update was functioning as it should on its new server.

So, in honor of my personal “new” New Year, I decided to celebrate — by finding something “new” to try because there are all kinds of opportunities to do cool stuff in my backyard.

Sports programs through Chelsea Recreation. Art and music through Chelsea Center for the Arts. Educations programs at the Chelsea District Library. Nature programs at the Discovery Center. Activities and classes through Chelsea School District’s Community Education, the Adult Learners Institute or the Chelsea Senior Center. To name a few.

Trinh Pifer, director of the senior center, wants everyone to make a resolution to get connected, learn a new hobby, or join a wellness program. And, of course, to see what the senior center has offer. She suggests the new watercolor painting and drawing classes that the center is offering.

Early stages of my cross-stitch project.

Me? I’ve started a new large cross-stitch project, which I hope to have completed in time for this year’s Chelsea Community Fair. Plus, I’m mulling seed and plant choices — since I must defend my cherry tomato winning entries at fair as well.

And Monday, I’ll begin the fruit and veggie challenge – something I hope to continue well beyond the those two weeks.

Plus, I’ve decided to learn something new.

A craft I’ve always wanted to try. And thanks to Community Ed, I will be enrolling in the Paper Players class, taught by Colette Luckhardt, which is billed as “a fun opportunity to learn origami and other paper crafts.”  I can’t wait to get started.

Chelsea offers the community so many ways to try new things, learn new skills, experience new music and art and dance. Resolve to be a part of it in 2013.

I have.
