Last Friday, I drove to the other side of Toronto (and back in one day about 600 miles) to pick up two Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppies.

I know, a mouthful of a name for a medium-sized pooch that’s the smallest of the retrieving dogs.

We call them Tollers (no, not “Trollers”) for short. These retrievers play along the shoreline doing a dog dance of sorts when we throw a ball, a bumper or a stick. It’s called tolling,  and resembles a cute, hurky-jerky kind of leaping motion, which attracts any ducks that are flying overhead. When the birds fly lower to check out what the dog is doing, the hunters then shoot the duck and the dogs head out into either the water or field to retrieve them and bring them back.

Many Toller breeders pick a theme for their litters of puppies and this one, born March 1, is Space Exploration. So, Buzz is named after Buzz Aldrin and Traveler for Space Traveler. Not quite sure what their fancy registered names with the Canadian Kennel Club are yet.

The pictures in this column are from these pup’s first full day in the good ole USA.
