Raegan Vargo, 8, of Chelsea and her feeder calf Bluejean were named the 2022 Chelsea Community Fair feeder calf champions Wednesday afternoon, and she was still working hard showing her calf when the judge pointed to her as the winner.

In her second year showing at fair, (she also has pigs) Raegan thought it would be fun to show a calf and said her calf’s name just “came to mind one day.”

She described the calf as friendly, but he does drool all the time.

Her advice to other youth who might want to try showing a feeder calf — “stay confident, everything will be OK and it doesn’t matter how you finish, just have fun.”

Caleb Benedict and Estavan.

For reserve champion Caleb Benedict, 11, of Chelsea, he’s been showing at fair since he was five years old and said he took reserve champion once before.

His calf, named Estavan, (he just liked the name when he heard it) likes to eat everything. He said the calf tried to eat his shirt while they were in the ring showing.

Caleb, too, shows pigs, and says they are less work than his calf and they are funnier, but they can be pretty mean, sometimes.

His advice to younger kids: “Don’t give up. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, just have fun.”
