Recent obituary: Evelyn (Haddad) Freiman

Evelyn (Haddad) Freiman, loving mother of nine, beloved grandmother and great-grandmother, dear aunt and sister, left this earth at the age of 89 years peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by love and family on Aug. 5, 2019 at Silver Maples Senior Living Center in Chelsea.

She was the widow of Joseph Robert Freiman, to whom she was married for 49 years until his death in 2001. She joins her husband, her parents, her sister, Catherine, and her brother, Joseph, who preceded her in death.

Born in Detroit on Aug. 4, 1930, Evelyn was the eldest daughter of Fred J. and Nellie (Hunkus) Haddad. She was a 1948 graduate of St. Benedict High School in Highland Park, and, after serving an internship in Brooklyn NY, earned a Registered Nurse diploma in 1951 from Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit.

Her training made it possible for her to help in the care of her parents and her husband during their terminal illnesses.

She was a pediatric nurse at Mt. Carmel intermittently over the course of 20 years, while she raised her growing family, and following that in the early 1970s, at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia. She briefly cared for elderly patients at a nursing home in Plymouth before returning to pediatric nursing at the Hawthorne Center for Children in Northville until she retired in 1987. She volunteered in taking manual blood pressure readings at St. William parish in Walled Lake and actively maintained her license to practice until 2014.  She was a proud participant in the Harvard Nurses Health Study, a longitudinal survey to identify risk factors for major chronic diseases in women.

Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at noon at St. Mary of Chelsea Catholic Church, 14200 E. Old U.S. Hwy 12, followed by cremation and interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI, where her remains will rest in peace alongside her husband’s.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Monday, August 12, 2019 from 2-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 North Main, and from 11 a.m. prior to the service at St. Mary of Chelsea Church on Aug. 13, 2019.

A memorial luncheon will be held in the Maples Room at Silver Maples, 100 Silver Maples Dr., immediately following church services.
