Reminder: May 25 Memorial Day Parade and ceremony cancelled

File photo. The start of a previous Memorial Day parade.

The 2020 Memorial Day parade, which normally takes place downtown and ceremony, which takes place in Oak Grove Cemetery, has been cancelled to comply with the governor’s Stay Home, Stay Safe executive order.

“Everyone is encouraged to give thoughts to the fallen even though it cannot be done in a large group this year,” said Craig Maier, financial officer of the Chelsea American Legion.

Howard Flintoft, commander of the legion, said veterans will hold a small private ceremony that will be videotaped by Randy Lee of RK Studios. And, Chelsea residents will be able to view it later in the day on local cable channel 18.

Organizers of the annual event suggest that folks honor those who gave their lives in their own ways during this somber tribute to the fallen, proudly fly their American flags, and take time to honor those men and women who gave their lives for this country.

  1. Why not post video online so that people who cannot get cable service can share in the ceremony? I honestly am really confused how people are able to maintain 6 feet separation at the grocery store, but the same people cannot manage similar safety measures while outside which is supposed to be less risk. Seems to be little logic to this decision.

    • When available, the video is expected to be posted on the city’s website. Hopefully later in the afternoon. You can find a tab on the home page of Chelsea Update on the top left side for the city’s website, once on the city website, go to quick links on the right side, then go to “other” for choice of videos.
