The Chelsea River Gallery will host independent filmmaker and international performer Emilia Javanica for a one-night only screening of her silent horror film “The Red Blob Massacre” on Saturday. Oct. 13 from 6-8 p.m.
The gallery at 120 South Main St. is hosting this free movie that’s appropriate for those 12 years and older.
Red Blob Massacre tells the story of Maddy Blitz, a young woman with horrendous looking teeth and nightmare experiences about not fitting in, according to information about the film.
Enduring constant torment from her peers and an awkward family life, Maddy’s feelings clump together to form a giant Red Blob that Maddy uses to seek revenge on her tormentors.
The movie features a live film score by the musician Simon Alexander-Adams, a raucous inspired performance with audience participation by the ensemble “Spontaneous Art” and dance tunes by local favorite DJ Chuck Sipperley, according to the information.
Javanica grew up in the Sonoma wine country where she attended a special high school for the arts with a focus on theater, according to the information.
During her senior year, she went on an intense and amazing three-week journey to Vietnam with her father, a veteran of the war, and fell in love with Southeast Asia.
She earned her BFA at the prestigious Cornish College of the Arts, then bought a one-way ticket to Taiwan, the information states.
She received a scholarship to study traditional dance and music at the Yogyakarta Institute of Art in Java, Indonesia, and continued to live, study and collaborate with local artists and community organizations in Yogyakarta for four years.
She recently completed her MFA in studio art at U-M School of Art & Design with a focus on the intersection of performance, puppetry, animation and film.
