It was a much-anticipated season opener for both the first-grade and second-grade Chelsea Recreation division flag football teams, the Cardinals and Saints, who met Tuesday night under the light of the setting sun.

The Cardinals were comprised of 100-percent walk-ons under the guidance of Head Coach Luman Strong.

The Saints team came together last week and were still learning each other’s names.

The Cardinals opened with a solid running game, confounding the Saints’ secondary with their laser-precision running.

The Saints jumped in with a first possession play-action, surprise attack with a bold pass on first down. And during the next Saints’ drive, the Cardinals’ defense opted to drop onto their bellies and roll in the grass, kicking their feet in the air. This served as a brilliant tactic, drawing the attention of the Saints’ blockers while providing for ensuing chaos on both sides of the scrimmage line.

A chorus of coaches and the crowd urged players to stand up, get up off the cool grass, and play the game.

By the second half, both teams had found their rhythm and had multiple passing and running plays for long first- and second- down touchdown runs.

In fact, scoring became so abundant that everyone lost track and both teams claimed victory as they strode off into a sea of mini vans, accompanied by their proud parents.

It was a great night of flag football and the season is just beginning.
