SRSLY visited South Meadows Elementary School on Oct. 22-23 and Beach Middle School on Oct. 25 to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and youth making healthy choices.

Red Ribbon Week is a substance abuse awareness campaign held annually in October.

SRSLY visited all 5th grade gym classes and had students complete posters depicting why they choose to be drug free. Students drew pictures of family, friends and hobbies, or wrote reasons why they choose to stay healthy and avoid substances.

Posters and poems were entered into a contest and 10 winners were chosen. SRSLY’s youth leadership team chose the contest winners. Winners were announced at 5th grade lunch on Oct. 23.

SRSLY visited students during lunch at Beach Middle School on Oct. 25 and had students sign red ribbon pledges stating why they choose to be drug free. Ribbons were taped to the cafeteria wall to display support for the students. SRSLY staff also played games with students to promote the belief that having fun is also part of being healthy.

The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people each year during Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week occurs every year between Oct. 23 – Oct. 31.

Red Ribbon week provides an opportunity for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Red Ribbon Week is sponsored by the National Family Partnership.
