(Chelsea Update would like to thank Joseph Yekulis, public relations director Servants of Charity at St. Louis Center for photos and the information in this story.)

St. Louis Center was the recent recipient of the St. Camillus Award given by the Lansing Guild of the Catholic Medical Association to a deserving organization caring for others with God’s love.

This is the second time the Sylvan Township residential care facility for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities has received the award.

St. Camillus de Lellis is known as the patron saint of the sick, hospitals, nurses and physicians, and lived in Italy from 1550-1614.

The evening began with a special “Rose Mass” at St. John the Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, during which Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing was the celebrant. Nearly 100 medical professionals were in attendance to renew their Hippocratic Oaths at the end of the Mass.

Following the Mass, a dinner was held at the Polo Fields Washtenaw, during which representatives of St. Louis Center were presented with the award.

Rev. Enzo Addari, SdC., administrator of St. Louis Center, accepted the award, which was presented by Rev. Timothy Nelson, MD, of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Jackson, and Dr. Juan Francisco “Paco” Lopez of Ann Arbor.

St. Louis Center was established in 1960, and has been serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities now for 53 years.
