Girl Scout Troops 42801 and 41097 were successful in raising the funds needed to replace the dying tree in Pierce Park, which is used for the annual tree lighting during Hometown Holiday.

The girls met with City Manager John Hanifan on April 4 to discuss the project with him and get the city’s permission to proceed.

The girls held a bowling fundraiser on May 20 and about 25 adults and kids showed up to bowl – plus the eight girl scout families in the troops.

They successfully raised enough money to not only replace the tree but also to cover the costs of having the tree professionally decorated with lights.

Replacing the tree will take place in September, this will give the tree a successful chance to take root. Decorating will happen early October. There will be weekly waterings by the two Girl Scout troops for the next year.

The scouts would like to thank:

  • Traveling Trees for reducing their costs so they had a reachable goal, and for the advice on which trees would be the hardiest and disease resistant.
  • Bob Pierce, executive director of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, who initiated the meeting with the City Manager John Hanifan.
  • John Hanifan for guiding and allowing the scouts to take on the project.
  • Chelsea Lanes for donating the bowling
  • And the Chelsea families that came to bowl on May 20.
  • Also the families who donated online – DeRosia boys, Frank family, Looney family, Ann and Michael Feeney, Nelson family, Driscoll family,  Hill family.
  • The Chelsea Lions Club and Bollinger Sanitation for their generous donations.
  • And of course, thank you to the parents of both troops for supporting the girls, bringing them to the many meetings (some last minute) and for the research done during the last three months.
