Sylvan Township Board calls special meeting to re-appoint board reps, discuss CAFA

Four of the five members of the Sylvan Township Board were in attendance at a special board meeting on Monday, Dec. 16 during which the board unanimously re-appointed Board Member Kurt Koseck as the township’s representative and Treasurer Rod Branham as the township’s alternate representative to the Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) board.

In addition, they unanimously approved Board Member Roy Schmidt as the township’s representative and Supervisor Scott Cooper as the alternate township board’s representative to the Chelsea Area Construction Authority Board.

Also, the board voted 3-1 to send the nomination of Brad Knickerbocker, an attorney, as the township’s choice for a currently vacant at-large seat on the CAFA board.

Each member municipality, the City of Chelsea, Sylvan, Lyndon and Lima townships was asked to nominate a candidate for the board for the vacancy, which is expected to be filled by a majority vote of  the CAFA board at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 9 a.m. at Sylvan Township Hall.

Lima Township voted recently to submit Board Member Greg McKenzie as its at large nominee. Chelsea unanimously chose Tom Osborne, a former Ann Arbor fire captain and former Chelsea volunteer firefighter, as its at large nominee and Hal Moore as its alternate at large nominee.

The Sylvan Township appointment came at the end of the special meeting under an agenda item “CAFA discussion” and was not called out as a specific item on the agenda.

Cooper told board members that the nomination was considered part of the CAFA discussion and  Branham told fellow board members that the nomination was the original reason for calling the special meeting.

Schmidt voted no saying, “It concerns me that this wasn’t on the agenda.”

Koseck was out of town and was not in attendance at the meeting.
