Task force formed to look into community center

By Lisa Carolin

It’s a new year and an opportune time for the Chelsea Parks Commission to decide its major goals. That topic led off the discussion at the Jan. 7 Parks Commission meeting.

Goals mentioned include:

  • identifying potential city land that could be used as green space
  • drafting parklet (a sidewalk extension that provides more space and amenities for people using the street) as alternatives to major park development
  • maintaining the Chelsea Area Friends of the Parks and Recreation group
  • continuing the annual park cleanup day

Members agreed that as the city of Chelsea grows, the amount of parkland needs to grow, too.

Other key areas of interest are making non-motorized connections and looking at the possibility of a community center.

To give attention to the topic of a community center, Parks Commission members agreed to form a task force made up of one Parks Commission member as well as representatives including those from the Chelsea School District, SRSLY, and the Chelsea Area Friends for Recreation.

Members of the Parks Commission had the chance to revisit the findings from the 2015 survey to which nearly 600 people responded. The plan is to put out another survey and update the questions to keep the survey relevant.

The next meeting of the Parks Commission will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers.
