I was honored with an invitation to cover a very special yearly event held each May for select Chelsea High School students at Thompson’s Pizzeria.

The “Thanks for Being You” luncheon honored 45 students in grades 9-12 for demonstrating “excellent performance or behavior at school in any of the behaviors we strive to foster,” according to an explanation of the accolade.

Students are rewarded for “excellent effort, behavior, citizenship, service, consideration of others, and an all-around positive impact on the school community.”

They are chosen by school staff and none of them know who nominated them.

“It’s not academic- or athletic-based,” said Principal Mike Kapolka. “You’ll see quite an eclectic  mix of all-around good kids.”

Lynda Collins, owner of Thompson’s Pizza, said she’d been hosting the event for at least 10 years and this year, 132 pieces of pizza were served to multiple tables of hungry and deserving students.
