The Adult Learners Institute offers class in Chinese history

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Susan Cross for the information in this story.)

The Adult Learner’s Institute offers such a variety of classes and instructors – meet Jiu-Hwa Upshur, who during the fall semester taught “Four Men Who Made Modern China.” The class focused on the four unique individuals who helped transform China from a traditional agrarian state to a modern industrial power.

And, this semester, Upshur is back.

She will share her extensive knowledge of Chinese history by teaching “Chinese Women: Traditions and Modern Change.” The class will take a look at the role of Chinese women in pre-modern times and the changes that have taken place as a result of Western contact in the 19th century.

Here’s a little bit about Upshur. Until recently, she was a professor of history at Eastern Michigan University.

She received her B.A. from the University of Sydney and her Ph.D. in Chinese history from the University of Michigan, where she was a Rackham Prize Fellow. Among other accomplishments, Upshur has written numerous articles on Chinese history and two catalogs on Chinese art.

She has lived and traveled extensively in East Asia, India and Australia.

If you are interested in taking her class, visit the Adult Learners Institute (ALI) website, and download a registration form. Or, you can call 433-1000 x 7358 to request a catalog and registration form.
