Phoebe Harris and Elinor Schultz, cello students of Sara Cumming, performed for the Chelsea Children’s Cooperative Preschool in September.

The preschool students were attentive and excited at the opportunity to not only hear live music, but also to hold and play a small cello.

Since the preschoolers began the school year learning about instruments, they have been making music with many of their own handcrafted instruments, including castanets, shakers, drums, and even canjos (banjos made from cans).

Visiting with the cello students from Cumming String Studio was inspiring to the budding musicians.

Sara Cumming, a Chelsea cellist and teacher, said, “It was wonderful to share music with these eager young people. It also provided an excellent performance experience for the older cello students, who have had very few live performances due to COVID-19 restrictions.”
