Some 1,700 tulips and daffodils are providing a spectacular spring show along Chelsea’s Main Street.

Chelsea Area Garden Club (CAGC) members planted the flowerbeds last fall. Cheryl Wells, the club’s civic beautification chair, anticipates the blooms will remain vibrant through the third week of May, barring a hot spell.

Club members will replace the bulbs with annuals around Memorial Day.

Among this spring’s many striking color combinations is a lavender and orange at the Palmer lot beds, at the entrance to the Chelsea Farmers Market.

Jennifer Fairfield, owner of The Garden Mill and a CAGC member, said when selecting tulips and daffodils for the various beds, she, Wells and other club members look for bulbs that are about the same height and will bloom at the same time.

As for color combinations, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

CAGC President Cathy Gillem said, “Helping beautify the city is one of our club’s most popular activities. We appreciate the city investing in the bulbs and the dedicated city employees who do a wonderful job watering the flowers throughout the summer.”

Club members also plant and maintain a flowerbed and flower-filled pots at the Chelsea District Library.

The CAGC, founded in 1997, is dedicated to horticultural education, city beautification, and socializing with others who share a love of plants and gardening. It promotes environmentally responsible horticultural practices and encourages conservation through education and demonstration. For more information, visit https://www.chelseagardenclub.com.
