Two Run For The Rolls participants finalists for 2013 Governors Fitness Awards

Two Run for the Rolls participants – Jacob Nelson and Sophie Lash – are finalists for the 2013 Governors Fitness Awards.

“Nothing Gonna Stop Me” Nelson, 8, and Lash, 14, were participants in the 2012 Run for the Rolls race, which takes place during the Chelsea Community Fair.

And, the Run for the Rolls’ Board of Directors was so moved by their participation that they recommended both athletes for the 2013 Governors Fitness Awards.

Jacob is a finalist in the Charles T. Kuntzleman Accepting the Challenge Award, which recognizes an individual who has overcome great challenges to pursue physical activity as a part of daily life. He is the son of Dan and Marijane Nelson.

Sophie is a finalist in the Governor’s Council Conquering Obesity Award (Individual), which honors an individual who has conquered obesity through dedication to physical activity and healthy eating.

She is the daughter of Robert (Skip) Dewall and Mary Hellner-Dewall.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize individuals, organizations and events that encourage others to make healthy choices by teaching, volunteering, role modeling or other community involvement, the release says.

The awards serve as a platform of appreciation and public recognition for these deserving citizens as well as a fundraiser for the Michigan Fitness Foundation.

A gala reception honoring all finalists will be hosted by the Governors Council on April 25 at Ford Field in Detroit. In addition to the winners being announced, all Michigan Olympians from 2012 will be recognized.

Keynote speakers for the event will be Dave Brandon, U-M athletic director and Mark Hollis, MSU athletic director.
