Jacob D’Lamater and partner Anna Wiley are following through with their plans to make Jacob’s Fresh Farm, LLC/Hives on the Hill Apiary, a destination for u-pick sunflowers.

The couple purchased the old Seitz farmstead, located at the corner of Old US-12 and Fletcher Road, earlier this year and are moving all their farm operations to the new property.

“We wanted to open up the farm to more on-farm activities so that people in the Chelsea and Dexter area have a local place to enjoy the outdoors, to see how a farm operates, and pick up local produce,” said D’Lamater. “Beautiful outdoor spaces to visit and enjoy is our passion and we love bringing that to the community.”

Currently the u-pick sunflower field is open Monday through Saturday 4-8 p.m. and Sunday 12-7 p.m. at 475 N. Fletcher Road. The cost is $5 per person (five flowers included with entry fee) and 10 and under are free. Cutting shears are provided and visitors are asked to bring a bucket or vase.

When you visit the farm, you’ll find raw honey from the apiary and produce at their roadside stand.

“We are in greens produce year round, and grow other fall and summer produce,” said D’Lamater. “We are currently growing almost 100 different varieties of produce—everything from tomatoes, greens, sweet corn, Asian veggies, eggplant, peppers, squash, onions, garlic, pumpkins.”

D’Lamater and Wiley are planning more activities on the farm in the near future.

“We plan on doing a pumpkin patch in the fall,” said D’Lamater. “We have planted two acres of lavender that will be blooming next year and will be open for u-pick with sunflowers and other cut flowers.”

You can find items from Jacob’s Fresh Farm at Agricole, Argus, and the Chelsea, Dexter, and Ann Arbor farmers markets.
