UMRC announces plans for new assisted living building

United Methodist Retirement Communities, Inc. (UMRC) a nonprofit leader in senior residential and healthcare services, announced its plans for Glazier Commons, a new assisted living building now being constructed on the organization’s Chelsea Retirement Community campus.

The name of the new building honors the legacy of Chelsea stove manufacturer Frank Porter Glazier, who in 1906 donated 33 acres from a former Washtenaw County fairground site to offer a new way of caring for Michigan seniors. That marked the beginning of a tradition of service on the site and the beginning of UMRC.

Scheduled to open in October, Glazier Commons is a continuation of a commitment to assisted living that began on the Chelsea Retirement Community campus in 1959.

UMRC will move residents from its original Glazier assisted living building into the new 66-unit Glazier Commons. It will feature up-to-date amenities, large private suites including separate areas for living and sleeping and a design that features natural light and a courtyard.

The building is a single story, making it easier for residents to access health and wellness and medical care services.

“Glazier Commons continues our promise of innovation to meet the needs of seniors as those needs evolve,” said John Thorhauer, UMRC’s president and CEO in a press release. “Now, assisted living will be located on a dedicated portion of our Chelsea campus with Glazier Commons connected to our Towsley Village memory care building. This will allow the best possible service for our residents and their families in a comfortable, natural setting.”

UMRC expects to announce details of a public opening, including tours, later this summer.

Building on a foundation of more than 100 years of service, United Methodist Retirement Communities is a faith-based, non-profit organization that promotes the wellness, dignity and independence of older adults, by providing high quality, innovative and compassionate senior residential care services across Southeast Michigan.
