Washtenaw County Road Commission and Sylvan Township officials met to discuss potential road work projects for this year on Monday morning, March 4, during the 2013 annual meeting.

Roy Townsend, managing director, told the Road Commission Board that there might be interest from the township to work with Lima Township to replace a culvert on McKinley Road that’s located at the corner of Lima, Sylvan and Dexter townships.

It’s a project that Lima Township officials are eager to undertake in 2014 in collaboration with neighboring townships because the culvert is used by Chelsea School District school buses, emergency vehicles and many township residents.

Road Commissioner Fred Veigel said the meeting lasted about two hours as Road Commission staff answered township board member’s questions that ranged from the difference between dust control treatments to the mechanics of township road funding.

“They recognize the need for road maintenance and being proactive,” Townsend said of the new township board, adding “Sylvan Township used to be one of the leaders in road projects.”

But, that’s not been the case in recent years.

The township has $13,363 available in Road Commission local road matching funds and $11,489 in drainage matching funds.

Road Commission officials said they plan to work with the board on “long-range plans like we are doing in Scio (Township),” Townsend said.

He said the Road Commission will put together a five-year plan and get the officials data and more information for further discussion and planning.

“The meeting went well,” Townsend said.
