In addition, the Sheriff’s Office also offered the following to help you protect your property.

Criminals breaking into homes are looking for a quick way in and out, and they often look for the most vulnerable home or homes.

So, here are few tips to help protect your property.

  1.   Prune your shrubs so that there is no easy hiding places close to your property.
  2.   Draw your blinds so that criminals cannot easily see into your home.
  3.   Don’t advertise new purchases by putting that new flat screen TV box in your trash.
  4.   Get motion sensors for lights so that anyone approaching your property is noticed.
  5.   Set timers for indoor lights so that when you’re away it looks like your home is occupied.
  6.   Reinforce strike plate on doors so that one kick doesn’t bust down your door. The more it takes to get in and the more noise they make, the less likely they are to stay and attempt breaking in.
  7.   Install deadbolts
  8.   Lock all doors and windows
  9.   Install and always set your home alarm
  10.   Get a dog. Criminals often state that a dog is the best deterrent.
  11.   Know your neighbors and watch out for each others’ property.
  12.   Join a neighborhood watch to meet neighbors, educate yourself on what’s happening around you and get involved.
