It’s time to start flipping through your favorite chili recipes and enter the 23rd Annual Cavanaugh Lake Chili Cook Off on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the American Legion Post 31 in Sylvan Township.

The annual competition is a highlight of the post’s 42nd Annual Winter Carnival.

Chili Cook Off Chairman Larry Doll says, “We’re looking for participants. Even if you’ve never done it before, it’s lots of fun and we’ve had first-time cooks win.”

The chili cook off is sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 31.

“We follow standard chili cook off format with 1 hour of preparation time followed by 3 hours of cooking time,” Doll says in a letter to participants.

Each cook must provide their own stoves, and all cooking equipment and utensils. Meat must be commercially purchased in the State of Michigan. Cook off officials will check in each team as they arrive.

The cook off is limited to just 13 cooking teams. So enter early to reserve your spot. The entry fee is $25 per cooking team.

If you have questions, call Doll at 734-260-1540 or email him at [email protected]

There are cash prizes, trophies and samples at 50 cents each.

Cooking begins at 11 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. when cooks will present their samples to the judges. From 2-3 p.m., the public will be able to purchase samples and vote for a people’s choice favorite.

The Winter Carnival begins Friday, Feb. 7 with a euchre tournament and ends with a new event – a kids’ carnival on Sunday, Feb. 9 beginning at noon. There will be more details to follow on other events.

Doors open on Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. with food and beverages and the euchre tournament begins at 7 p.m. for those 18 years old and older. There’s a $10 entry fee this year.

On both Saturday and Sunday, there’s a fishing derby, plenty of food for sale, live music and lots of fun for everyone.

The three-day fundraiser benefits veteran’s projects and programs.
