Wednesday, Feb. 6, was the official ribbon cutting at Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority. It was attended by member municipalities and other residents. The morning started with a brief history of the WWRA by Frank Hammer followed by an official ribbon cutting with Sybil Kolon from Manchester Township.

A lot of hard work and dedication has been put into the WWRA organization over the last 22 years by both the members of the WWRA board and the public. Without either group, the expansion and success of the recycling program would not have happened.

After the ribbon cutting, those interested, were shown around the facility and able to view the single-stream line in operation. Watching the line up and running was quite mesmerizing and the materials were sorted by machine and hand. By the end of the line, there was very little waste and no remaining recyclable materials.

Now that the facility is officially open and everything is running smoothly, we are planning on offering tours. The tours will include a brief informative question-and-answer session and a chance to walk around the facility to see how things are recycled and to learn about what more can be done in the future.

If you, or your group, would like to set up a tour starting in March, please contact Laura Scriven at [email protected].
