Chelsea City Council forms Sustainability Advisory Commission

The Chelsea City Council adopted a resolution to form the Sustainability Advisory Commission on Jan. 8, which among its roles and responsibilities will be to look at alternative energy and the costs.

Currently, the city utilizes electrical and renewable energy sources but there has been increasing interest in looking into other sources.

The seven-member commission will be comprised of city residents including two City Council members (Frank Hammer and Tony Iannelli), one Planning Commissioner, one building or development professional, a member with alternative energy or green technology experience and two members at large.

The City Council “may annually renew the committee as needed,” according to an overview of roles and responsibilities.

Commissioners will be asked to explore green building strategies including opportunities to reduce energy consumption and replace carbon-based energy with renewable sources in new and existing buildings.

Among the principal roles of the committee is to present research findings to the City Council on six different areas for further study or action. It should be noted that this commission, like the Human Rights Commission, has no final decision-making authority, which rests with the City Council.

Among the broad topics this commission will research are: alternative energy, green building technologies, green infrastructure, recycling and waste management, transportation and mobility and water resources.

Check the city’s website for further information and applications for appointment to this commission.
