Chelsea Lacrosse tops Dexter in OT; first win against crosstown rivals since 2009

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Coach Joe Koengeter for the information in this story and Mark Bogarin for the photo gallery from the game.)

When the late Ron Twig started the lacrosse program in the season of 2008 at Chelsea,  one of his main focuses was to beat cross town rival Dexter.  I can remember coaching with him in the first season and the game against Dexter was always the one he had circled, said Coach Joe Koengeter.

Some notes on the rivalry and night

  • The temperature was around 45 degrees and light rain at the game start
  • Chelsea had not defeated Dexter in lacrosse since May 5, 2009
  • This was the second win over Dexter in program history for Chelsea.
  • The rivalry record is now 11 to 2 in favor of Dexter

Scoring by quarter
Chelsea: 1 in the first, 4 in the second, 0 in the third, 1 in the fourth, and 1 in overtime
Dexter: 1 in the first, 1 in the second, 2 in the third, 2 in the fourth, and 0 in overtime

The game started with senior Ryan O’Quinn scoring with 4:18 left in the first and Dexter answering the goal with 1:53 left in the first.

In the second, O’Quinn would find the back of the net again with a feed from Jonah Bogarin.  The Bulldogs would add 3 more goals (2 by Ryan Hein and 1 by Jack Miller) before Dexter could answer scoring with 1:03 left in the half.

Dexter would win the third quarter scoring 2 goals to pull within 1 goal going into the 4th quarter.  Jonah Bogarin scored his first goal of the game from a feed from Chris Xenakis with 6:52 left in regulation.  Dexter would answer with 4:09 left in regulation.  Dexter scored off of a turnover to tie the game with 0:11 seconds left.

The teams headed into sudden victory overtime.  Dexter would win the faceoff and get 2 shots on goal that hit the upright but not go in.  Chelsea committed a slashing penalty putting Dexter on a man advantage for 1 minute but the Chelsea penalty kill unit was able to answer.

The Bulldogs gained possession and started the offensive attack.  With 1:42 left in the first overtime Chris Xenakis found Jonah Bogarin again for the game winning goal.

Josh Ciaccio was in goal with 12 saves on the night.
