15-1: Chelsea softball roars back from first loss of season

Chelsea softball team didn’t allow the team’s first loss of the season defeat them Saturday during a round robin tournament at the Chelsea Softball Complex.

After dropping a close 8-5 game to a strong Salem High School in the opener on April 28, the team roared back to down both Gibraltar Carlson 7-1 and Jackson 12-2.

In the first game of the day, Chelsea and Salem battled back and forth said coach Jeff Connelly. Chelsea was led by senior Sydney Hines who went 3 for 4 at the plate, while driving in 1 RBI and Alise Hale who went 2 for 4 droving in 2 runs in the game.  Maddie Kemp and Phoebe Kahler also contributed, each driving runs in the contest.

In Game 2 of the day, the Bulldogs dropped Carlson and was led by junior pitcher Hayley Townsend, who threw 7 strong innings, giving up just 5 hits, no earned runs and striking out 3 on her way to her 6th win of the season.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Sydnee Liedel and Sydney Hines who went 2 for 4 and 1 for 3, respectively, at the plate, while each driving in 2 runs in the game.

Alise Hale, Stephanie Dark and Hannah Kahler also drove in runs in the contest.

In the final game of the day, Chelsea defeated the Jackson Vikings 12-2 in a 5-inning contest.

Maddie Kemp threw 4 strong innings surrendering just 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 6 to earn her 9th win of the season. Peighton Root, who is recovering from off season shoulder surgery, also pitched in the contest.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by senior Hannah Kahler and juniors Peighton Root and Maddie Vasquez all of which went 2 for 3 at the plate, while combining to drive in 7 of the 10 runs Chelsea scored in the contest.

On Friday, April 27, the Lady Bulldogs played a single game with the Saline Hornets.

Chelsea scored early and often, led by senior shortstop Alise Hale who hit 2 homeruns and drove in 5 RBI’s in route to a 14 to 3 victory over the Hornets.  Chelsea continued their hot hitting with strong hitting performances from Sydnee Liedel who was 3 for 4 at the plate, Peighton Root who went 2 or 2 on the day, driving in a run and Sydney Hines, who hit a homerun in the contest, went 2 for 4 at the plate and driving in 2 RBI’s.

Other contributors were Caroline Hirth who had 2 RBI’s, Maddie Vasquez who also drove in 2 along with Grace Bush, Hannah Kahler and Hayley Townsend each of whom had an RBI in the contest.

Hayley Townsend collected her 5th pitching win of the season throwing 6 strong innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 earned run to preserve win for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea, now 15-1 on the season, travels to Skyline on Wednesday, May 2 for a single game, before returning home to play a double header with Olivet High School on Friday, May 4 at 4 p.m. at the Chelsea Softball Complex.
