Ninety children who are headed into Kindergarten this fall were awarded certificates for completion of a Safety Town course that took place last week at North Creek Elementary.

The course was held through Chelsea Community Education and began with a visit from Taylor Dunn of the American Red Cross, who taught the children how to prepare for a disaster by assembling a family emergency kit.

On the second day, Amy Teddy of Mott Children’s Hospital, taught the children about car seat and bicycle safety. The hospital partnered with the Chelsea Rotary and purchased helmets for all 90 students.

Chelsea Police Officer Shane Sumner gave the children an opportunity to see his police car on the third day and taught them about stranger danger, gun safety, and to dial 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

Thursday, the children went to the Chelsea Fire Station and learned about fire safety including how to stop, drop and roll.

On the last day, Louie the Lightning Bug came to teach the children about electrical safety before families and friends attended a Safety Town graduation ceremony during which each child was given a certificate of completion of the course from coordinator Sally Wingle.
