Chelsea City Council adopts grant resolution for pedestrian islands, sidewalk infill

For residents looking for safer pedestrian crossings in the city, the Chelsea City Council took the first steps toward providing several new ones on Wilkinson Street.

Last week, elected officials unanimously adopted a resolution to authorize the mayor and city manger to sign a contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation for the grant.

The small urban transportation program grant will pay a large portion of the costs to install three pedestrian islands on Wilkinson Street at Chandler Street, at Wellington Street and at a mid-block crosswalk near The Pines.

In addition, it will provide funds to fill in the sidewalk on the east side of Freer Road along Oak Grove cemetery.

The city was awarded an about $71,000 grant for the estimated $84,100 project.

The project is expected to be bid in November and commence once school is out during the summer of 2020.
