Drop boxes at Chelsea District Library to close Friday night

The staff at Chelsea District Library appreciates the positive feedback from our community as we navigate the ever-changing circumstances surrounding the emergence of COVID-19.

Based on the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the State of Michigan, evidence of community spread within Washtenaw County, and in the interest of community safety, the Chelsea District Library will stop the curbside delivery pilot effective Friday, March 20.

We realize that closing the library until further notice creates hardships. While these are difficult decisions, your health and that of our employees and community must come first during this rapidly evolving and unprecedented public health crisis. If you have items on hold or want to place items on hold please call 734-475-8732 x.209 by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, March 20, the drop boxes will be closed. We would prefer that you not return items at all as no late fines will be assessed until further notice.

All accounts are active and we are extending library card expiration dates until May 30 for people who want to access online materials and resources. As supplies allow, we will provide CDL string bags at the curbside pickup table to help you keep track of your library materials during the closure.

While the library is closed, the following resources and services will be available:

Librarians will continue to answer your questions by phone or email from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 734-475-8732 ext. 219 or email a librarian at [email protected]

Library staff continues to provide timely and accurate information on COVID-19 as well informative and entertaining resources to help you through this challenging time. We will share those on our website(www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org/covid-19/) and on the CDL Facebook and Twitter pages.

Access free WiFi 24/7 at public locations throughout the community including the library parking lot; the library Reading Garden; the library lawn; and at Sylvan, Lima, and Lyndon Township halls.

We will continue to provide digital collections and online resources such as HOOPLA, RB Digital Magazines, and LIBBY from our website: www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org/downloadable-collection/

Please watch our website, call our general telephone number (734-475-8732), or visit us on Facebook regularly for future updates. Our staff appreciates your understanding and we look forward to opening the doors and welcoming our community back as soon as safely possible.

  1. As a member of the Library board, I can assure the community that your library has struggled mightily with these decisions. The staff have my undyiy gratitude for their thoughtfulness, creativity and compassion as they have attempted to navigate these new and changing decisions.

Like many of you, I will experience library withdrawal but hope these decisions will help get us all back in the doors – safe, healthy and soon.
