Beach Middle School cross country runners post ‘strong performances’

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Loren Thorburn for the information in this story.)

The Beach Middle School cross country team hosted Pinckney Pathfinder Middle School in a dual meet held near Pierce Elementary School on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Overall, we had a strong performance from our runners in both the boys and girls races, said coach Loren Thorburn. This was the team’s first 2-mile race of the season and we were pleased with their efforts on a warm afternoon.

The boys race was really close with Pinckney taking the win by 6 points (Pinckney with 25 points and Chelsea with 31 points). AJ Smith, a 7th grader, performed well for the team by placing 7th overall to help bring the score closer than we expected coming into the meet. Also, for the boys team, Nathan Sobiechowski had a solid race running almost even splits and almost running under 16:30.

The girls won their meet handily with a pack mentality against Pinckney. (Pinckney did not score due to the fifth runner dropping out of the race.) Two runners from the Chelsea girls team who stood out to the coaches were Josie Jackson and Lissa Krueger who competed well throughout the race, especially near the end where they both sprinted in extra hard to the finish line.

We were excited about the depth of our girls team, said Thorburn.

The next meet is away against Bedford Middle School on Thursday, Sept. 24.
