Hometown favorite David C. Bloom and Friends will be featured in concert at the First United Methodist Church, 128 Park St., on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The concert is free and open to everyone.

Singer-keyboardist David Bloom is joined by jazz drummer James Boyd and featured vocalist Lori Minnick.

The trio has expanded its repertoire to more than 100 songs from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. They bring new colors and harmonies to timeless melodies and lyrics by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and Burt Bacharach, to name a few.

Bloom studied jazz at the Oberlin Conservatory. He has been styling the Great American Songbook since the 70’s, when he got his start at the Roostertail Club on the Detroit River.

Boyd has been trading rhythms and riffs with Bloom for three years, since playing together in the period-musical “1940’s Radio Hour” at the Historic Chelsea Depot.

Minnick and Bloom first sang together five years ago in the Michigan Pops Choir. They continued their collaboration, adding Minnick’s soulful and sultry voicing to Bloom’s brassy, bluesy arrangements.

“We love exploring the depths and pushing the boundaries of these classic songs,” Bloom said in a press release, adding “There’s no such thing as a ‘standard’ Standard.”
