The Chelsea Boys’ Golf Team hosted the Dexter Dreadnaughts in the annual Chelsea-Dexter Ryder Cup on Monday, April 15 at Reddeman Farms.

“Going in, I knew Dexter was a little stronger at the top of their line-up, and had a little more depth, but I was hoping we could steal a handful of matches in the middle,” Head Coach Joe Ewald said.

Dexter won the cup with a score of 8-1/2 to 3-1/2, which on the surface, sounds like a pretty lopsided victory. However, four of the Chelsea losses were decided on the 9th hole, he said.

“If we’d just won a couple of those, we’d have ended up with a very close match,” he said, adding, “I was very proud of the way our guys battled to the end.”

Ewald called the match “a great event, with a lot of parents and even a few former players in attendance.”

He said it was probably the largest crowd the team had ever had at a golf match, and it was great to have so much support.

  • On Wednesday, April 17, the team played in the Monroe Jefferson Invitational at Lilac Golf Course in Newport.

In very wet conditions, with standing water everywhere, the Bulldogs finished with a team score of 379 to place 9th out of 16 teams.

“This was not the toughest field we will see all year, and a middle of the pack finish was my prediction,” he said.

This was the team’s first 18-hole tournament.

“If the guys could just find a way to save a shot or two each, we would have finished just out of the top 5,” he said.

The event was won by Trenton, with a score of 340.

Scoring for the Bulldogs was J.J. Duncan with a 91, Teddy Darr shot a 92, and Zach McKinley and Sean Lyons each had a 98.

  • The team played in the Pinckney Invitational on Saturday, April 20 at Rush Lake Hills Golf Course.

The Bulldogs finished 14th out of 16 teams in extremely bitter cold conditions, with the wind chill in the mid-20s, which takes a little fun out of the game.

Although the team’s finish was “not too impressive,” the golfers improved 10 shots from the team’s first outing.

“I’m not too worried about our finish, I knew it would be a strong field,” the coach said, adding, “Our goal this year is to get better every time we play, and we did just that, shooting a final team score of 369.”

The event was won by Pinckney with a score of 325.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was freshman Duncan with an 88, Darr shot a 91, Blake Salgat a 93, and Michael Purdy had a 97.
