Chelsea High School Senior Carter DeRosia has helped to make his dream come true. He will be attending the University of Michigan this fall thanks to hard work and a financial scholarship.

“The University of Michigan has been my dream school for as long as I can remember,” said DeRosia, who recently was awarded the Marsh Family Merit Scholarship. “I would have still attended even if I wasn’t awarded the scholarship.”

The scholarship helps. It’s a four-year renewable scholarship which gives DeRosia $10,000 per year for four years while he is in the College of LSA (Literature, Science, and the Arts) at U-M.

He must maintain a GPA above 3.0, complete 20 hours of community service each school year, and attend LSA scholarship events where the Marsh Family is present. The scholarship can be used for tuition, textbooks, and room and board.

DeRosia has worked hard while at Chelsea High School. He’s in the National Honors Society, is a 4-year varsity tennis player and golfer and was named All State in tennis his junior year, and he is a youth leader at St. Mary’s Church Chelsea Youth Group.

“I think Chelsea High School has done a fantastic job on preparing me for college,” said DeRosia. “I took six AP classes and maintained a 4.2 GPA while doing so. All of my teachers have been absolutely incredible all four years while here and I probably couldn’t have had as much success without them. By taking the most challenging courses available and having such amazing teachers, I am confident that I can be a successful college student in the future.”

DeRosia’s favorite subjects are math and science. He plans to pursue either a computer science degree or something premed related in college with the plan to go to medical school.

“This scholarship gives me the opportunity to focus more on doing well in my classes rather than stressing about how I would pay for them,” he said. “My mom graduated from U-M, my brother is in his third year there right now, and I lived my whole life 20 minutes from campus, so it’s always been like home to me. Choosing the University of Michigan was a no-brainer for me.”
