An estimated 100 people waited in line for the annual Chelsea Area Garden Club plant sale to open Saturday, May 6, at 8 a.m. at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds.

Many garden club members were on hand to direct and advise shoppers about the many varieties of shade and sun plants at the sale.

“I think it’s the consistency people like about this plant sale,” said plant sale co-chair Mary Randolph. “They can get good plants at reasonable prices.”

That’s what drew people like Barbara Medeiros, who came from Novi.

“I read about the Chelsea Garden Club plant sale in the Michigan Gardner magazine,” said Medeiros.

By 9 a.m. many of the tables were empty, but there were still many shoppers, some pulling wagons filled with plants.

Although the temperature was chilly, the sky was clear.

“I’m glad it’s sunny,” said Colleen Starkey, a garden club member working at her first plant sale. “Yesterday we set up and it was cold and rainy.”

The event is in its 19th year and is always scheduled the weekend before Mother’s Day to kick off the gardening season.

The plant sale helps support the club’s grant and scholarship programs.
