Chelsea boys soccer 10-3-2 after win over Adrian

Bulldog-logoChelsea’s varsity soccer team traveled to Adrian on Tuesday to play the Maples in an SEC White matchup.

Chelsea beat Adrian 8-0 at Chelsea the first time the two schools played.

Coming into the game, Chelsea had been 1-1-2 in its previous four contests, struggling to get the results they had achieved earlier in the season. With the season rapidly winding down and the boys goals of competing for a league title in mind, the team came out with a lot of energy this game.

Scoring in the 2nd minute of the game, senior Campbell Fahle knocked in the first goal off an assist from junior Matt Klink. Within 2 minutes, Campbell found fellow senior Ethan French on top of the Penalty Area where French was able to knock in the second goal of the game. The Maples seemed to pull themselves back together a bit after that and continued to fight, holding the Bulldogs scoreless over the next 10 minutes and creating a shot at goal for themselves. Junior defender Zach Lee stood tall and blocked the shot keeping the 2-0 lead in tact.

The first two substitutes of the game (Cullen Lindsey and Mason Mitchell) for Chelsea came onto the field and made a massive impact in the game. Less than 5 minutes onto the field, Chelsea’s sophomore Lindsey joined the scoring off an assist from fellow substitute, senior Mitchell. Within a minute’s time, Cullen returned the favor, assisting Mason on his first goal of the game. It was under 3 minutes later that Mason again found the net, picking the ball off a Maple defender then chipping the goalkeeper for his second of the game.

Less than a minute later, Chelsea drew a free kick outside the Penalty Area. French stepped up and took a great free kick, curving the ball up and over the wall into the top corner of the goal. Within 4 minutes, Chelsea again was on the board by another Mitchell goal from another Lindsey assist.

The two entered the game in the 9th minute of play and Chelsea was up 2-0 at this point. From the time they scored their first goal in the 14th minute until the time Mitchell scored his 3rd goal in the 22nd minute, the team had 5 more goals on the board. Five goals within an 8-minute span is an incredible feat said coach Shawn Hayes.

To score a Hat-Trick is an incredible feat and to do that within a 7-minute span is just insane, the coach said.

Junior Aidan Kurth scored Chelsea’s 8th goal of the game off a Free-Kick. Aidan hit a terrific shot up and down over the wall landing right at the near post on the ground. Seniors Nic Arons and Zach Skogheim combined for Chelsea’s 9th goal of the game. Chelsea won 9-0 by mercy rule at half-time.

“This was an insanely good performance by the team,” Hayes said. “Every player was involved and played off of one another very well on the day. The boys showed the kind of drive and focus they have for finishing out the season at their best. I was very proud of the team for their efforts in game.”

The win improves Chelsea to a 10-3-2 record and the program’s first time in its 20-year existence as a varsity sport to record four consecutive double digit winning seasons.

The only time Chelsea’s program had four consecutive winning seasons prior to this was back in 2000-2003.
