Chelsea Boys Track and Field Season Underway

(Chelsea Update would like to thank David Slusser for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Bulldogs Men’s Track Squad competed in the SEC Indoor Invitational at Ypsilanti Lincoln on March 23.

For the opening meet of its season, the Chelsea Bulldogs brought a mixture of young talent and experienced runners to compete in an SEC showdown. Our veteran leaders competed hard against a competitive field, while our younger guys gained valuable experience and learned how to compete at the highest level. We entered this meet with an elite mindset and left satisfied with our performances, David Slusser, the new head coach said.

The 4×800 relay team of Connell Alford, Bram Hartsuff, Leo Swager, and Nick Spruce started the racing with a 3rd place finish of 8:37.

The distance squad flourished throughout the meet with an 8th place finish by Zeb Swager in the 1600 and 3 top five finishes in the 3200. Connell Alford won the event handily with a blistering time of 9:29, while Bram Hartsuff placed 2nd and Leo Swager placed 5th.

Nick Spruce led the sprints with a 6th place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 53.3. A young 4×400 relay team of Josh Doyle, Beckett Boos, Gus Wehrly, and Mo Cugliari turned in an 8th place finish.

JJ Turnbow jumped an impressive 18 feet in his first ever long jump event.

The Dogs are a young squad with over half of its 77 kids on the roster consisting of freshmen and sophomores. As we progress throughout the season, we will rely on our dynamic coaching staff to develop our young talent while keeping our returning athletes competitive, the coach said, adding, this was a solid start to the 2023 season.

Our next meets will be Thursday, April 6 at Parma Western for a varsity invitational and Saturday, April 8 at Grass Lake for the JV squad.
