Chelsea City Council makes several appointments

There will be a new face  on Chelsea’s Planning Commission and two familiar faces returning to the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA).

Following unanimous votes, with Council Member Peter Feeney absent, the Chelsea City Council approved the appointment of Cathy Scull to the Planning Commission and reappointed Jasen King and George Kinzer to the ZBA.

In addition, Julia Upfal was appointed as the new Chelsea Planning and Zoning Administrator while City Manager John Hanifan, officer Dennis Hall and Upfal were appointed as the city’s Ordinance Enforcement Officers.

Scull, a resident of Chelsea for six years, is also the Sylvan Township assessor for the same amount of time. She was appointed for a 3-year term through June 2022.

King and Kinzer were reappointed to the ZBA for 3-year terms through Sept. 30, 2022.

Upfal’s appointment as planning and zoning administrator begins Nov. 1 as it is expected that Christine Linfield will retire during the month of November and the overlap will allow for a smooth transition.  Upfal, the city’s community development director, recently finished her 90-day probation period with the city.

The City Council also adopted an ordinance that allows for the rezoning of a property at the northeast corner of Dale and Wellington streets. The vacant property was rezoned from AG-1 to RS-2, single family residential moderate density.

Eagle Scout Jordan Jedele will soon be honored with the proclamation from the City Council for completing the rank of Eagle Scout that includes his project that resulted in a new tennis wall at Beach Middle School where he oversaw 44 volunteers who logged 233 hours to complete the community service project.

The building that houses and city offices and Chelsea State Bank will soon have a new parapet wall roof at the 305 S. Main St. address. The orange tile roof will be replaced with one that’s the color of a copper penny by Billy White Roofing of Jackson at an estimated cost of $29,600.

The City Council also set a fall goals and objectives review session on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. prior to the regular City Council meeting.
