The Chelsea freshmen football team began its season with a 36-28 home win over Monroe on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Monroe jumped up to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Chelsea came back to take the lead 15-14 at the end of the first. The score was 22-22 at halftime and Chelsea led 36-22 after 3 quarters.

Griffen Murphy threw 3 touchdown passes to Tyler Valek. One from 65 yards then a one yard toss and finally a 25-yard score. Murphy also had a 5-yard run. Joe Taylor had over 100 yards rushing including a 5-yard run. Logan Vaughn was a perfect 4-4 on extra points.

Corbin Steele led the team with 10 tackles. Tyler Wallgren and Brandon Westcott each had 6 tackles in the game.

“The Monroe team was big and athletic,” said coach Dennis Strzyzewski. “Falling behind early can be stressful, but the kids just kept competing and showed that they are not going to be a group that gives up easily. We have a lot to work on, but this was a nice start for the guys.”
