(Chelsea Update would like to thank Joe Koengeter for the information in this recap story and Mark Bogarin for the two photo galleries.)

On April 23, the Chelsea Varsity lacrosse team traveled to Ann Arbor Huron, and lost 12-6.

Scores by quarter for Chelsea were 1 in 1st, 1 in 2nd, 1 in 3rd, 3 in 4th; Huron scored 2 in 1st, 3 in 2nd, 3 in 3rd, 4 in 4th.

“This was another slow start for us where we turned it on in the 4th quarter but it was too late to make a comeback,” said coach Joe Koengeter, who added, “Our heads were not in the game as we made a lot of mental mistakes and committed 8 penalties, which made it very hard to get back in the game.”

Jack Hancock, Ryan O’Quinn, Jonah Bogarin, Mike Beneteau, and Chris Hudson all scored one goal, while Baily Weatherwax had 1 assist.

Dustin Beckett was in goal with 18 saves.

On April 25, the Bulldogs were at home against Kalamazoo United, and won 9-3.

Scores by quarter for Chelsea 1 in 1st, 2 in 2nd, 3 in 3rd, 3 in 4th; Kalamazoo 1 in 1st, 2 in 2nd.

“Again, we came out to a slow start and committed 10 penalties during the course of the game,” the coach said, adding, “The penalties really kept us from getting in a rhythm as the game was not played well by either team.”

Kalamazoo committed 13 penalties, also.

Weatherwax scored a season high 4 goals and 1 assist with Beneteau, O’Quinn, Bogarin, Christian Clippert and Dominic Goderis all adding goals.

Dominic Goderis scored his 1st goal of the season as he is a defense-man who does not see much action on the offensive side of the ball, Koengeter said.

“Dominic made a great defensive play to take the ball away and started to clear the ball to the offensive side, no one picked him up so he went straight to the goal and took a great shot.”

Goalie Beckett had 7 saves.

On April 29, the team played Belleville at home and won 12-1.

Score by quarter for Chelsea 2 in 1st, 5 in 2nd, 4 in 3rd, 1 in 4th; Belleville 1 in 4th.

“This was the first full game that we put together,” the coach said. “We played well from the opening face-off until the clock read 0:00 at the end of the game. Defensively, we played outstanding and goalie Dustin Beckett saw the ball very well making 11 saves.”

The coach said, “Every opportunity they had to score and get back in the game Dustin was there to make the save. Offensively, things were consistent all night.

Bogarin had a season high 5 goals and 1 assist with teammates Hudson (2 assists), Clippert (1 assist), Tyler Stealgreave,

Austin Freeman, and Devon Conti each added goals. Weatherwax finished out the scoring with 2 goals and 1 assist while Jake Perry had his 1st assist of the season.

“We played the game well only committing 2 penalties, which did not come until the 4th quarter,” Koengeter said.

Beckett had a shutout going until Belleville took a great shot and scored with 12 seconds left in the contest.

This put the team’s record at 5-4 going into last night’s game.
