Chelsea Kiwanis Club Hears from Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition

(L-R) Megan McCall from Zero Waste Coalition and Kiwanis President Haley Thomsen.

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, Chelsea Kiwanis heard from Megan McCall of Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition.

The group’s first project took place about three years ago and focused on foam recycling to prevent its accumulation in landfills, where it does not deteriorate. The coalition partnered with a group in Dexter to collect 7 tons of foam in those three years.

They partnered with the high school to collect plastic bags at the school and around town.

At Sounds and Sights, compostable products were provided to vendors and collected after use, diverting over 400 pounds from the landfill.

The coalition is also working with the Chelsea Community Fair to reduce waste.

Partnering with 5 Healthy Towns, education about recycling is provided to community members. They hope to join with other organizations in Chelsea as a resource to lessen waste.

The all-volunteer organization is applying for grants to provide sidewalk recycling bins downtown and to run articles in the newspaper.

New Chelsea Kiwanis members (L-R) Bob Luckritz, Michelle Rankin, with President Haley Thomsen.

Monday’s meeting marked the formal recognition of Mike Madison as President Elect of the Kiwanis Club of Chelsea. His term as president of the club begins on Oct.1.

Two members of the club received their formal induction during the meeting. The club welcomed Bob Luckritz and Michelle Rankin.
