Chelsea Kiwanis learns about the 2020 census

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Monday, Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard a presentation about the 2020 census from Chuck Gerhke of the Ann Arbor League of Women Voters.

The League of Women Voters is celebrating their 100 year anniversary. The group sponsors educational sessions about topics of public interest like the upcoming census.

Article I, Section 2 of the U. S. Constitution calls for a census to be taken every 10 years. Results determine the size and number of congressional districts in each state. For example, Michigan had 17 congressional districts in 1940 when it was much more populous compared to other states. Today there are 14. It is predicted to fall to 13 after the census.

Federal dollars are distributed based on the census. In 2016, Michigan received 29 billion of the 675 billion total for the U. S., about 4 percent. The funds support Medicare, Medicaid, student loans, and SNAP (food stamps).

Seventy-two years must pass before specific data on the census can be made public. Until then only information in the aggregate can be used.

The census will conducted from mid-March through July next year, with April 1 being “Census Day”. There are three ways to respond to the legally mandated census, the paper form, online with a computer, or by phone.

A census taker coming to your door happens if there has been no response, for whatever reason.

Monday, we will have our 2019-2020 club budget review and approval for club members. The budget review was postponed to this meeting due to our 2020 census presentation

Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis.
