Chelsea Parks Commission discusses Pierce Park construction work

File photo by Lisa Carolin. Meg Gower explains concepts of the proposed Pierce Park enhancement project.

The Chelsea Parks Commission met via Zoom on Sept. 1, and one of the topics was the upcoming construction work at Pierce Park.

City Manager John Hanifan gave estimates on the cost of a new gazebo, saying that a hexagon shaped gazebo would cost $17,000. He suggested the cost saving rectangular gazebo at a cost of $9,000. Construction should start in October and be ready for next spring.

Other elements of the Pierce Park improvement plan to receive more immediate attention include landscaping and modifying the location of the rock. City officials remind residents that the rock offers a public forum for free speech, but painting anything other than the rock is considered graffiti.

The trails update, with regard to the Connecting Communities Grant 2020, was also discussed. The grant is for engineering and needs to be submitted to Chelsea City Council for approval. Commission members talked about a couple ways to connect the Border to Border Trail through the City of Chelsea with options including a trail along Letts Creek and a connection between Veterans Park to Timbertown by the Community Garden. The goal is to minimize the impact to green spaces.

Also discussed was this past summer’s Rec-it Tuesdays, which were much more difficult to collect data on compared to last summer’s robust first season. The goal is to provide programming for families and get them out to local parks. Parks Commission members talked about continuing Rec-it Tuesdays for a third season next summer.

The next meeting of the Parks Commission will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m.

  1. Time to get rid of the rock.
    It’s become a political signboard.
I never thought Chelsea had a racism problem until “BLM” was painted over “Happy Birthday America” on July 4th.
    Sad.
