At the Chelsea Friends and Family Wellness Coalition meeting Oct. 6, two interventions were reviewed.

Courtney Stinson heads up the Healthy Grocery Store Initiative. The goal is to promote fruit and vegetable consumption, to help people with specific dietary needs, and to help people make good decisions when buying food. Much of the work has been done during Wellness Weekends at Polly’s market.

Jon Van Hoek led the review of the Ironclad Baseball Festival, which had received funding for a second year.

“The festival involves two of the healthy initiatives-move more and connect with others,” said Van Hoek. “It is a free, family-friendly event.”

This summer’s festival attracted an estimated 300 people as well as eight men’s and four ladies’ vintage baseball teams.

The Chelsea Friends and Family Wellness Coalition is looking at new intervention ideas for the Year 6 plan including walking program marketing, sponsorship for the Huron Waterloo Pathways, healthy art activity for youth or seniors, and a youth healthy eating coordinator.

Coalition member Gary Maynard added, “We also want to address mental health from a community wellness point of view.”
